it was really one of the first arab infulenced areas to pop off...
Great area... but became a stop off to India for Britan.. then frace then italy............. They needed it for trade.... carved out three areas so that all the CAC could eat at the same time.... then bounced.

anyway the french for some reason was weak as fukk back in the day and sucked at colonizing. Lost haiti and some other areas. This was one of the areas they didn't keep-- Djibouti gained independence, but was so sectioned off by that time that it had to form it's own nation..............Plus was granted a seat at the UN as long as they played horn of africa psudo-c00n every once in a while.
The area was good from Worlds Neolithic period, lol until the 19th century......... but CAC intervention has ruined it forever. One political party, one tribe running everything with the support of the Presidents wifes clan...and tribe... and One opposition party who wants a real democracy but would never get support from the West.

Why is the Kenyan army so shook of Al-Shabaab then?
The Ethiopians came in and lost thousands of soldiers
Try to occupy Somali territories and you get that work even if its from ragtag militias
Plus, Somalia has a great case in the international courts and the Kenyans which are one of the darlings of the West don't want no image tarnishing esp with relation to its neighbor esp with recent history... which is why your President is basically saying

his problem is that he's running a government like he ran his NGOs and he isn't doing enough to halt corruption and really put resources into the armed forces
I swear, fixing Somalia is very easy... even in a stupid UN-US backed system which has crippled political process. It's all about diverting the resources to the right initiatives instead of paying MPs and executive office officials insane amounts.
Put half of the budget towards security and you'll see those young guys who fought in Al-Shabaab become a SNA soldier real quick.
But it's like these governments don't want to do that and those outsiders definitely profit off of continued conflict
It also doesn't help Somalis being the same people, perhaps the most homogenous country in the entire African continent sharing the same language, culture, and religion can't put petty clan differences aside to build a beautiful country that is resource rich with the longest coastline in the continent
