Why is corn syrup in everything in the US? That’s one thing noticed when I visited, I don’t get it. There’s already a ton of sugar in most of our shyt, you don’t need to add corn syrup.
it goes deep, but the short version is that corn is used in every produced & processed food in the US, due to a combination of USDA subsidies and lobbying. im not even sure exactly why or how, but corn farming is subsidized for some reason. its basically a kickback scheme ran by the corn lobby, agriculture contractors and "big food."
I really dont understand the depths of it but once you look into how corn is used, and who is benefitting, it leads you down a massive rabbit hole. much like the rest of our economy, its just a circle jerk cycle of private and public businesses creating problems on one end and selling a solution on the other - all to the detriment to the consumer and the environment
in the US - any drink, sauce or condiment that would normally call for real sugar just uses HFCS instead, or sometimes HFCS and sugar together
corn is used in things you wouldnt even imagine in the US, even indirectly somewhere down the line in the creation process
the good thing, i guess, about the US is that there are always alternatives. even if the mass produced, easily accessible stuff is pure garbage, in this day and age there are dozens of better and healthier, more natural alternatives available. even now available in areas and to certain demographics that would historically not have access. people dont have to be stuck with garbage anymore...but not everyone is up to speed on the different options available to them.
ketchup is gross but you can make your own good tasting, natural ketchup at home for cheap if you wanted
