The stereotypes are only part of the problem.. the biggest problem is how the stereotypes are portrayed...
The Wire was full of stereotypes.. but the characters were written so well and had so much depth to them that they rise above them. So much that you hae interest in both the cops and the criminals lives... To this day it's the only show that I've seen that got urban personality right... Most other movies and shows (even great ones) like The Sopranos and The Shield... had rehashed lazy stereotypes when it came to black and latino characters...
To be honest the premise for the movie doesn't sound THAT bad... it's HIS granddaughter.. so he obviously has some sort of connection to her... it doesn't sound like a typical "white savior" role IMO.... I'm gonna wait for at least a trailer before I attempt to judge how this movie looks
And I have to disagree with the cat that said Octavia Spencer is strictly picking c00n roles.. I honestly think she's taking get the best roles that are offered to her. She's not exactly getting Halle Berry or Paula Patton.. she's not going to get the roles they get.
