Fantasy is definitely a very eurocentric genre, there is no question about that. I believe Sci-fi is a little different in that it often portrays post-racial societies, so

As a 90s baby, kinda gotta disagree. All the black people my age I know at the very least fukk with dragonball, harry potter, lord of the rings, etc

maybe not some of the classics by Herbert, Asimov etc but hey most people of any ethnicity dont

i think being into science fiction would involve reading science fiction books, watching stuff that is on TV or already popular or comic books doesnt really count, at least as to what grevioux is saying

i agree with he is saying, i think economics and survival issues take a toll, and i think the overall whiteness of the field makes it unattractive also

Most black people are not into sci-fi you guys can try to deny all you want but it's true.

Just look at books, there are black sci-fi novels but they hardly get any attention because black folks aren't reading them.

The black books that do sell are romance, humor and black struggle type stuff.

And I have a feeling a sci-fi show with an all black cast would fail in a second.

black kids read and watch the same sci fi as everyone else.... just like the watch the same horror films and kung fu films as everyone else.

He's got a point in terms of career pursuits. I know tons of kids who were interested in that stuff growing up, but none of them actually tried to make them career options. Everyone went for the usual unrealistic shyt (music, sports, etc, not that no one should try for these) or ended up doing minimum wage jobs if they didn't end up unemployed.

He needs to step his game up, too, though. The Underworld series was straight ass, and this new film doesn't look any better.

as a dude with a foot in animation/movies/comic industry... the career pursuits part is spot on. i know a lot of cats that used to draw and shyt when we were younger and they ahey toss it in the bushes cecause they dont think u can make dough doing it.parents will also steer children away from the creative shyt also. i got intp it despite my parents not giving any fukks about my art AND not nowing shyt about art schools until i went to a regular college.

and saying that there are 'many african americans in comcis.." is a bit of an overstatement. there are a few, but its a low percentage. they all know each other, know of each other, or will know each other eventually.

I think black people like stuff like sci-fi as much as anybody else. Me and a lot of other kids were heavy into stuff like comics/videogames as well.

To be honest I don't think there are all that many black filmmakers in the first place, and the few there are probably feel pigeonholed into doing certain types of movies (either comedies or hood movies), especially if they want to sell. So I think it's less to do with black people not liking the genre and more to do with it being a tougher sell and harder to get a budget for. After all a sci-fi movie with tons of special effects is much more expensive to make and much more risky than a comedy.

I'd be interested to see the average ROI of sci-fi films compared to other genres. Unfortunately all the research I've tried to look up either lumps sci-fi in with action/trhiller or puts sci-fi and fantasy together. My assumption that the average movie goer is less interested in sci-fi than other genres may be incorrect.

Avatar was a visually revolutionary movie in cinema history directed by one of the greatest directors of all time, especially when it comes to making money. I'd like to see the average figures for the genre.

I'm not trying to put down sci-fi or anything, it's my favorite genre, and I kind of like that a lot of people haven't seen many of the sci-fi classics.

scifi/fantasy has mad blockbusters. Star Wars, the new Star Trek movies, bourne, etc etc. There are big flops like Dredd, Dune, John Carter of Mars but quite a few of them do very well in the box office.

Not sure what point you're trying to make with 'pure' scifi vs. this and that. That's kind of irrelevant since all scifi really is a setting, not a plot. T

there is a difference between hard and soft scifi. most of the stuff we get from hollywood is soft scifi. you dont need education for that. this is mostly a culture and poverty issue, but not an education one, at least not directly.
