This show is really good, and they both have decades of improve background. I remember seeing Key hold it down when he was part of second city as far back as in 1998.

As far as sketches going over long, if you've ever performed/written anything like that, you know coming up with a way to end it is the hardest part. And you never want to go with the obvious ending, so sometimes you take a longer walk to get to somewhere you think is funny.

But I love that sometimes they'll just take it straight to absurd and cut to black, (like the "I said biiiiitch" skit).

I get what you're saying but sometimes I feel they do it just to fill time. Just like how they tend to abuse slow-motion in a lot of their sketches. Sometimes simplicity works best, like in this one:
