This isn't news. In poor countries fast food isn't cheap, so they actually raise the quality to make it upscale.

This. I visited my brother in laws family in Ghana last summer and the fam was like. Hey lets get some KFC and I was like :dwillhuh:.

We went there and the set up was legit kind of nice and it definitely felt like they put more effort into the food. But crazy to see something so common in America being treated as a middle class hang out.

I'll tell you what though.. the KFC and McDonald's I had in Egypt was a lot better than I'd find right here at home. And I never eat from those chains here.

One time I was getting sick of falafel, white cheese, eggs and pita for breakfast and took a trip to McDonald's for some hot cakes and hash browns.

The cashier personally wiped the table down and then brought the food to my table. :banderas:
Another week I drank a milkshake every day cause I was craving it. The chicken Big Mac they got was :wow:
My breh went to Egypt and ate McDonolds. :heh:
:mjlol: this reminding me of all the mcdons and BKs i ate in Lebanon. shyt was hillarious looking back on it but the food was actually better than in america. but the local chains and street manakish places were way better.
in china KFC (Ken De Ji :mjlol:) was everywhere too. way more popular than any other fast food places and they shyt was like light years ahead of american kfc. i actually went there a bunch cause i kept flying into places late without dinner and it was open 24/7.
also though pizza hut is like a formal restaurant in china. no joke, you sit down in this lavish ass pizza hut and they have steak on the menu :dead:

How the fukk doesn't Africa have their own popular fried chicken franchise? AFC? This is sad. This is worse than selling ice to an eskimo. :mjcry:

They do. In Nigeria, 'Chicken Republic' came into the game before KFC. There were a lot of fast food franchises that were around when I was a kid (Mr. Biggs, Sweet Sensation, Tantalizers etc). The food on offer was tailored to the local pallette.

However, the brand standards were very loose and management was poor. Food supply chains were also pretty poor as was service. It wasn't uncommon to go to Mr. Biggs and they'd tell you "Oh, we don't have item A today".

KFC changed the game (at least in Nigeria) in that the supply chains were better and the brand standards were much more uniform. I've been to a bunch of KFCs in Nigeria (Lagos Airport, Ikeja, Abuja Mall etc) and one thing you notice is the standardization of service. KFCs are clean and generally better set up than their Nigerian counterparts.

KFC also made a big splash in Nigeria as fried chicken is already something we're familiar with. All you have to do is modify the sides. In the US you get the chicken with a biscuit and mac & cheese or potato wedges. In Nigeria you get the chicken with jollof rice (similar to a latin-tomato rice) or which moi-moi (kind of like a bean-cake) or with coleslaw.

I think Dominoes is also in Nigeria but I'm not sure if it's hit the same heights as KFC. Cheese (dairy to be honest) isn't really part of our diet so it's a bit of a harder sell.
