Meaning, didn't they use other passages from the Koran to justiy their actions.

So called Christians got the greenlight from their leader, the pope, to justify the chattel enslavement of human beings. Not sure if Caliphs or Imams were the ones who gave those Arabs the okay to enslave non Muslims, or whether their own interpretations of Koranic passages allowed them to justify it.

My take is that youre correct.

To enslave a free person for the purpose of sheer profit is outside of those bounds, to sell that person is outside of those bonds, to mutilate castrate and strip that person of their culture and humanity is ou5side of thise bounds.

And whoever transgresses the boundaries of Allah egregiously and with oppression, be he "Muslim" or kaffir, white or Arab, will meet Allah with Allah angry at him. They can fool themselves and hide behind institutions of power and commerce in this life, but who can hide from the complete judgment of Allah in the next world.

Then you are those killing one another and evicting a party of your people from their homes, cooperating against them in sin and aggression. If they come to you as captives, you ransom them although their eviction was forbidden to you. So do you believe in part of the Scripture and disbelieve in part?
