To try and distract from why people are actually protesting, plus Americans have a weird love for soldiers so it's an easy way to get them to turn on the protest.

The US has an incredibly obsessive nationalism veiled as "patriotism."
They play the national anthem at every varsity sports game in every sport in American public schools, and also at other events.

And its obvious that 1/2 the gym took the side of the cac that picked him up. It more than likely would have turned into a beating had the kid been like these "tough," "alpha," Coli members and tried to throw hands.
