@NoHateLeftBehind his influence on Jay Elec will be pretty obvious after you hear his debut, "Heavy Mental" but like @Deltron check out his whole career.

Fred.

damn, that's eerie. it's not just the voice that's similar it's the subject matter too.

thanks for educating me on that :salute:

I really had no idea it was that pronounced

I still hold jay elec in high regard tho and I think this is more coincidence rather than outright biting. maybe dude just happened to have a similar voice and be on the same steez :manny:

I bought heavy mental back the late nineties the first day it dropped. Then got on Jay electronica in around 2008. I never got the similarities outside of a similar voice. I don't think killa priest is anywhere near the level of rapper as Jay electronica.

in the examples @hex posted of Killah Priest I find them similar because their subject matter has references to the metaphysical, astronomy, and has religious themes and of course, the voice.

but you're right about Jay Elec, I first heard him in prolly 09 and I knew then that he was just on an elite level in terms of bars. somebody mentioned in an old killah priest vs jay elec post that jay was spitting some of the best bars they had heard in YEARS, and that was my reaction too. I don't know enough about Priest's catalog to make an informed decision about who's better between him and Jay Elec but the fact that I'd come across Priest's music numerous times before and it didn't really stick with me and Jay Electronica's DID has me leaning his direction.
Exhibit C got me hyped but this song made me a believer

fast forward to today and this one has been in rotation heavy ever since it came out-at the gym, in the car, on the bus, I just like starting off my day with it.

Well, look at it like this. You obviously see the similarities....but the songs I posted came out in '98. Jay Elec had a decade or more to improve on that style, and the benefit of mainstream recognition.

It's kinda like if you ask a mainstream rap fan "Supreme Clientele" or "The Blueprint"....most will say Jay's album, despite the fact that Just Blaze and Ye admitted they basically stole Ghost's sound for that album.
