Killer Mike’s efforts to get money into black-owned banks is focused on one of the biggest stars in the world. The Atlanta rapper penned an open letter to Michael Jordan which urges the basketball great to put the profits of his Olympic Air Jordans into a black-owned bank.
“Dear MJ #23, on the behalf of black people and cops (I have loved ones who are both) thanks for the million dollars to the NAACP & Police Orgs,” he wrote on Instagram. “Now we wud like to Challenge you to send the profits of this Olympic Jordan Drop Into a Black Financial Institution. We know that with your example other Players will follow. I’m sure Jim Brown, Kareem & Bill Russell will agree. Love ya man. U truly were/are the greatest.”
Killer Mike’s message comes after Michael Jordan recently denounced police violence despite being famously quiet about social issues. Jordan also pledged $1 million to the International Association of Chiefs of Police’s newly established Institute for Community-Police Relations and the NAACP Legal Defense Fund.
The Run the Jewels member’s letter was not strictly directed at Michael Jordan though. The MC provided a reminder to those without such fame and wealth.
“Black People and Allies of black people instead of buying this or any shoe,” Mike continued. “(1) Start an account with a black bank or credit union. (2) Save 300 bucks and get a secured credit card (#citzenstrustbank has a good one). (3). Charge these or any shoe, pay your bill on time building your credit. This way u r fresh as u wanna be, saving your actual cash and building your credit score. That way these shoes are a tool for your empowerment and not something that chains you into poverty. I hope MJ and Us, Do The Right Thing!”
Killer Mike has been adamant about the power involved in putting money into black-owned banks. He believes it is one of the best ways tofight prejudicein the aftermath of high profile police shootings.

Killer Mike so fukking ignorant.
There is no ________ owned bank
They are all Fed Banks, this black bank movement seems like some government co-opted shyt to get black dollars in banks because historically blacks are weary of them.
fukk that, blacks need to keep their money in their pocket or homes and out of banks (who don't keep YOUR money, what you actually do is loan them your money, which is why they can lose it and as only have to give you back the governmented mandated amount that is covered in FDIC insurance)

Mike can do what he wants with his money, he has a pretty good business and buisness wise he is providing a pipleline in Nike for black executive advancement.
I don't agree with Mike on a lot of things, but this begging him to be what he isn't is getting tiring.

In the comprehensive context of Jordan "not being black enough," people miss how over the years with his position in the Jordan Brand as CEO, the company is the only one inside of Nike that has had multiple African-American presidents. (Disclosure: I worked with Nike from 2001-05, but not with the Jordan brand.) Outside of Nike president Trevor Edwards, the execs at the Jordan Brand have always been the highest-ranking blacks in the parent company (Nike). This is something that Jordan's made sure of; something that is not happenstance or a mistake.

"Michael's willingness to hire, support and promote minority leaders throughout his business ventures has been remarkable," Larry Miller, president of the Jordan Brand said in defense of the perception that the depths of Jordan's contribution to "the struggle" goes no further than that of a glorified pitchman. "He has always been focused on creating successful and sustainable businesses and has empowered minority leaders, including myself, with the opportunity to grow and advance those businesses."

Half measure

Would be better off if Jordan made a separate black business.

Half measure of what, its a full measure for those he supports and those he has enabled to rise executively.
Jordan wouldn't be Jordan without Nike, I see no reason why he has to have a completely sepearte black business when he is allowed a measure of freedom in executive placement within the Jordan Subsidiary.
That said if business men who are black want to buy their own shoe company and make it a black owned one, there are lots of black millionaire anda few billionaire businessmen, they can do that, the question then is why, when the market is so heavily in the hands of Nike and Addidas.

So no, it wouldn't be better for Jordan to have his own shoe company, because it would probably be out of business against the weight of the NIkie and Addidas machines.

Scared of what, its called reality. Plenty of black athletes have tried to get into the black marketplace with shoes and at low prices and have been ignored by the market they are targeting.
If you can get the same results from within Nike and still provide a business pipleline for black advancement, what is the problem?

Funny how some want others to be super radical and militant and put down a man who is actually doing something. I'll never understand that crab mentality.
