DX: How do you feel about that? Would you look at an artist differently if you knew his music was ghostwritten?

Killer Mike: It depends on the song. There are some records that are for people that, even though I wrote the record, they needed to say the words. I wrote the record for them…from their perspective. To me, that makes sense, and that’s more than appropriate. When it comes to pop hits or radio records, it really doesn’t matter who is writing it, ‘cause it’s almost like a commercial or a jingle—so you can take it however. I’m usually writing a record that’s not a radio record, so for me, it’s heartfelt and is based upon some type of emotion. When I write that record, I want to make sure I’m best representing that artist. Now if I just bring that person that record, and that’s not who they are, I don’t like those records as much. I don’t appreciate them as much, because I feel like a person undeserving got a great song. I feel like a person who really doesn’t live or convey those words has a song that has been wasted. And that’s where I take contention. But if you got a Top 40 hit, and I wrote or someone else wrote it, I’m not mad at that, ‘cause I understand we’re in an age where, “This is rapping and Hip Hop,” and there is songwriting for commercially driven artists. Even though I’m not in that field, I understand the game.

DX: So why do you think that Rap is the only form of music where it reportedly matters if you’re writing your own lyrics? Why is that?

Killer Mike: Well Rap is poetry, and you expect the poet to be the writer of it. And it matters, but don’t think it holds the same way it did. Rap is predicated upon [the concept of], “I am telling the truth about my life and my environment.” So as long as rappers are presenting Rap in that way, you are going to be expected to be a writer of your life and your environment. It’s that simple. It’s not hard or overly complex. As long as we take the stance, “nikka, I’m real,” we really expect you to really write your shyt.

___
On Scarface

Killer Mike: The greatest rapper alive is Scarface, and no one else can have that because no one else has a 27, 26-year career of no wack albums. If you read the preface of The Art Of War, it tells the story of three brothers. One brother can see sickness and disease before it ever forms, he can tell you what to do to change that, and his name is not known outside that house. Another brothe can see disease when it’s first starting to form. If you start to cough, he can give you some herbs and remedies and stuff—that brother is known around the village. He is a village doctor. And then there is another brother who doesn’t really know much. He knows a little about what his brothers taught him. He knows how to cut you, bleed, put leeches on you and operate. He’s the greatest doctor in the land, and he works for kings and queens

So when you’re talking about the greatest ever, you’re going to be talking about someone you don' know, but someone who inspired or inspires someone you currently worship. Let's go down the lis of artists that have collaborated with, rap like, or are influenced by Scarface. Killer Mike, Ice Cube, Tupac, Jay Z, Beanie Sigel, DMX, Das Efx. I can keep going. We ain’t even start naming Texas rappers yet. So when I say Scarface is the greatest rapper of all time, I am saying it from the stance that I am a rapper hoping to have a career that could potentially last as long as his. I’m hoping I could have a 30-year career of no wack albums. There’s just no argument with that for me. Y’all could argue who got bars and silly stuff, but no one has given you the truth, the validity, for as long as Brad Jordan. Nobody’s done it, and nobody ever will. So we should value him. We should treasure him. And I know he likes white people too(laughs)

DX: So why do you think he isn’t as heralded even though he has platinum records?

Killer Mike: He has had multiple platinum records, and he has had more than two classic records. Why isn’t he as heralded? But the fable goes, the brother who knows it before it even forms is in the house. The house is Hip Hop, and a lot of times we are fans of Hip Hop, and we debate Hip Hop. But a lot of times we in the yard but not in the house. I’m in the house. I hear what the rappers that you worship talk about when the cameras aren’t on. We talk about Scarface.

Read this last week. Respect the hell outta Mike Bigga but there is no way. NO WAY that i'm respecting ANY rapper that uses a GHOSTWRITER:stopitslime:

Do you lose respect for nikkas who ghostwrite for another nikka:mjpls:...in a sense they are assisting in the fraud and staying quiet about it by being "ghost"...id like it to be out in the open like exactly how much was written by who...I think that has to be done in hiphop...concept help and hooks is one thing, but I wanna know what verses u writing and ain't writin:comeon:

Nope I respect the artists with the pen game to write not only THEIR verses, but verses for others. That takes TRUE talent and repsect for your craft.

And let me clarify, I don't repsect artists who use GW and still expect to be respected as lyricists. I give Dr. Dre respect moreso than I do Kanye West because Dre isn't selling himself as a lyricist, while Kanye expects to be in everyone's top ten

I see ya point cuz I really could give two shyts about Dre writing his own lyrics or Puff and Birdman....but a Kanye doin it and talkin like they top 5 of all time is just:childplease:...but on the other hand let's use somebody like Juvenile,Too Short or Jeezy, don't really see themself as lyricist or try to get props for they lyricism....but they have great catalogues:blessed:,legendary verses that inspired a nation:ohlawd:

Do you know how :sadcam: status I would be if I heard all Jeezys catalogue been ghostwritten?or the gawd who started it all Short had a writer for 80% of his shyt:mindblown:...id be like Lord Jamar hearin that Mr Cee tranny audio:pachaha:

I felt some kinda way hearin Eazy E didn't write his own shyt:to:....so I don't know if only reason I don't care about Dre,Puff,Birdman doin it is bcuz it was kinda known by me from the jump with both except Birdman...and I absolutley never gave a damn about Birdman as a rapper where I would care who wrote his shyt.

I gotta say I don't know how I feel, but I think its alotta dudes talkin that "real hiphop" shyt but givin dudes they claim ruining the game right now bars to recite...that's kinda dirty to me in a way

that give a pass to a ghostwriter comment..
makes me think he wrote for someone people try to campaign as a goat.
if you write for someone,...
plus, you are an emcee..
you already know, what it is..
no need trying to politicize around it...

lots of rappers use gw, and think no one notices.
it is speculation, but after this..
do I add 3k, to the possible ghostwritten like nas, and jay.

i fukks with killer mike, but a lot of the times when he does interviews, he sounds like a smart dumb muthafukka...he tries so hard to be deep and intellectual, that it comes across as dumb as hell...like one of those 'if c.a.t. really spelled dog' type muthafukkas...prime example: the whole reason why scarface is the goat, dumb as hell...everybody gives face props and do it openly, so what is he talking about?...he just wanted to tell that story to make it seem like he's more hip hop than the next person...get the fukk outta here...

another example: having to be real about the stuff you spitting...none of these muthafukkas is slanging that much weight, killing that many people, etc...but yet those are the ones that are considered 'real' and 'relatable'...get the fukk outta here...it's music, entertainment...just make some hot shyt...i don't care if you wrote it, your mama wrote it, that blind muthafukka down the street, or yall 3 legged dog wrote it...it just better be some hot shyt...when I was younger it mattered, not no more...

on a side note: at this point, I think the goat is LL cause he got these stupid muthafukkas using the term and really believing there has to be only 1 that is considered the greatest ever...even though it all boils down to personal opinion...

edit - to clarify: yea, it still feels better to think that whatever artist is the one that wrote the shyt you vibing to...but after awhile, you gotta think if a person has been in the game for years and has a lot of music, he/she probably got ideas/lines/help from people with some of that shyt...not saying people wrote whole songs for them, but at least had input on songs...and I have no problems with that...when I was younger, yea, but not no more...it just hit me one day: if people help muthafukkas in all other aspects of life and the people getting helped are respected/praised, why cant rappers be the same way?...at that point, i said fukk it, just give me hot shyt...

But see sound like your cool with "help"....in the case of ghostwriting you don't know exactly how much help somebody got,if it was some lines,a hook, whole verse whole song....you can't make the claim you spit the realest shyt and fans should feel you cuz you real if you not the author behind the real shyt:pachaha:...it sound like it don't bother you bcuz u think its just "help".

Far as the Face shyt,I think he made a good point, people give Face credit, but maybe not the same kinda credit they give behind closed doors...I do feel like some rappers name top5's as not to offend certain people or to get in certain peoples good graces...I've seen nikkas top rappers list change depending on what region they in so not to piss off rappers they fuk with on the radio in that region, rappers they fuk with but wouldn't really make they favorite rapper list if they wasn't in they state:heh:.

Sayin he's in the house just seems like he sayin he sees who dudes say they favorite when they have nothing to lose or gain...and I don't doubt a lot of these dudes list they top 5's on some political shyt...his reasoning is why I don't see how E-40 ain't in everybody top 10...dude got likee 2 wack albums to me his whole career:mindblown:...and could still be droppin near classics if he would put out 1 album instead of 2 and 3 at a time:blessed:

:ohhh:I would say it makes a lot more sense with him than just about anybody else that's heralded and might explain why he act like he can't just drop a album bcuz he will expose himself....but on the other hand when he really blacks out there's nobody else I can think of that can black out on that level in this era...his verse on that Rick Ross song Pirates I think it wuz called?is just:ohlawd:...so maybe it just takes him forever to write a great verse.

All the GOATs have had a ghostwritten verse or two. It's part of being one of the greats. It's like snatching a lame nikkaz bytch, a lesser rapper might right something that they don't deserve so they gettin took.

Better to reign in Hell than serve in Heaven
There's a difference between ghost writing and helping tho. I think that's what he was trying to say. When he writes some songs, he still needs the artist to sit with him, say what they want say, then maybe he fixes up the flow and cadence and shyt like that

that's a lot different than being handed a cd with a song already done and being told "copy this word for word"

either way, you shouldn't be on air acting and crying about you the best and you know damn well you had 4-5 people helping you out on VERSES (hooks don't count) cause it is poetry.. and i could come out reading maya angelou poems but what have i really done
