I (and I'm sure many others) understand that it was a joke. If he wouldn't have said it with a black person sitting next to him (and I don't believe he would have) then in my opinion he probably shouldn't have said it.
I get the point just fine, I just feel like it's more of a conditioned response at this point and I don't like that.
It's to the point where it feels like black folk fight for the right to be the face of ignorance. You got people that feel uncomfortable when they see whites saying/doing ignorant shyt because it feels like those images are 'ours'. I see that on here and in 'real life' to the point that it's concerning. If whites wanna call themselves nikkas, I say let them have it back.
Respect is mutual and while I don't agree with your stance I understand it, I do. I'm just trying to get you to understand mine.
Given a choice from this point forward, if you could make a decision for black folk en mass, would you say it would be better to get more or less invested in 'nikka' and all it entails? Getting people to stop saying it in the context of racism or otherwise isn't an option. I vote less...if not completely divest all attention and emotional attachment from nikkadom. Not everybody is ready for that of course but assuming you also vote 'less' in this scenario how long does one need to wait to be less affected, less associated with, less defined by nikkadom?
That's where my head is at. That's where Mike's head seems to be at when he's not defending himself from his fans who are all waiting for him to have the same response that they had. I don't think that's any more fair than black folk telling other black folk when they should 'get over' ______. But no, intention be dammed, he is now c00nin Mike.

Not following to closely but one thing That seemed interesting to me is this kind of "you're not down for the cause if you don't do xyz"vibe I get from some of Mike's comments. See that here too. Just seems intellectually lazy to me.
Yeah at that point he was just being defensive. I don't think it's "if you ain't doing xyz, you ain't down" and more like don't come in here questioning how I feel about the word nikka when I'm out here dedicating my time and energy to these issues. I'm Glad Roland Martin chimed in as someone who was on the same wavelength there, I hope he actually does his show and they touch on it.

Ok cool yeah l knew there was something I'd likely missed. Haven't watched the show in about a year might have to tune in if they do.
I actually am not offended neither. I don't like Bill Maher because he is slick in general but Mike was right.
Arm chair militants who are outraged yet are not helping to do anything for black commerce like Mike shouldn't be talking. Actions speak louder than words. Spend your time being ouraged or put that effort into building something.
The way they came at him in general.was foul because they assumed Mike had seen the footage and was being silent. They wanted drama.
