the strip club owner makes more than the strippers.

restaurant manager makes more than the bartenders or servers.

some IT folks make more than managers. but yeah, those are specialized folks like engineers who have a particular knowledge base.
We're excluding owners.

Managers don't always make more. You can't tell me a mid level manager is making more than his rockstar bartender in a popular place. Higher management such as Assistant General Managers and General Managers? Yes, most of the time. But new to mid-level managers are 80% fukking retarded and their pay grade reflects that.

And this is excluding the owners.

but when you look at it for the most part, players make more money than coaches, and coaches make more money than GM's.

However, the player reports to the coach, and the coach reports to the GM.

you have some exceptions to the rule with cats like poppovich and phil jackson. but for the most part, the average player in the NBA makes like $6M a year, which is more than most coaches. and I guaruntee most GM's don't make that much.

but can ya'll think of any other profession where your subordinates routinely make waaaayyyyy more money than the bosses?

NBA players get paid more than coaches--their bosses--because:

1) In economic terms NBA players are far more scarce than coaches, which is opposite the normal case in business. Normally employees are more replaceable than bosses and so employees are partially paid less as a result. McDonalds pays its managers more money because McDonalds managers are more skilled, efficient, etc than normal employees and are thus less replaceable.

2) NBA players are the primary moneymakers for the NBA whereas NBA coaches are not. People don't watch basketball to see coaches coach; they watch basketball to see players play. So players (employees) are the "rainmakers" in the NBA business whereas in normal businesses, the coaches (or bosses) are.

this

Id say players are a part of the total product, along with 'game experience' that the teams are selling. GM's, coaches, assistants, arena workers etc are ones who are trying to make the product better/more profitable or both
