What's happening here is the cycle of sports life. 20 years from now you will not be able to convince certain people that the best SG of the current era is not as good as Kobe was 20 years prior...for several reasons.

We do it now with the likes of Jerry West and other position players. Yet we can't convince 50+ year-olds who watched nightly back then that Jerry West and Wilt Chamberlain weren't the best that ever played.

You never look at the score during games right? Because if you're watching, you should already know who's winning....right?

Its crazy to dismiss math when the outcome of the game is decided by adding up the number of baskets each team makes, using a multiplier based on where the shots are made from and determining which number is greater. Who needs math though?

Actually there are plenty of times in the middle of a basketball game that you can tell which team is winning with out the score based on a number of factors like body language, crowd engagement, and shot selection. I don't need to know the exact score if they are at home and the crowd is going nuts to get an idea who is winning or who is taking over the game.

What's the algorithm that calculates the true level of skill it takes an elite player to make a basket when double teamed when the game is on the line?

Does that same algorithm factor in if it is a playoff game or a regular season game?

Does it add weight if it is a game 3 or a game 7? What about if the series is down 0-3 vs being tied 2-2?

When the "math" you're using has David Robinson listed as the 2nd greatest player of all-time, says Chauncey Billups 2008 season was better than any season Tim Duncan has ever had in his entire career, and that Ed Davis is currently playing better basketball than Andre Drummond, Kyle Lowry is the 5th/Andrew Bogut is 6th/Derrick Favors is 7th/Enes Kanter is the 8th best player in the NBA this season among other things.....maybe you should rethink your calculations, don't you think?:jbhmm:

Math you say? Ok...

30k points + 5 rings + countless other records and accolades easily make Kobe top 10 of all time.

Matter fact, there's only two players in the top 10 who have over 30k and at least 5 rings, and they're considered the two greatest ever so fukk what you nerds are talking about. Basketball is about points and wins that's it.

You have to understand the numbers you're looking at. A player like Ed Davis who is used in short spurts will have an inflated WS/48 because fatigue is not factored in like it would be if he played 36 mins. It will also skew your WS/48 if you hog the ball. Again, its not a standalone stat. All stats need to be corroborated with other numbers.

There are legitimate reasons for Kobe's advanced stats being lower than the stans want them to be.

Not a Kobe fan but this is a terrible article and the metric used doesn't even factor defense, which Bryant was better than Drexler and Miller. Bryant isn't one of the top 10 players ever, but he's pretty clearly in the top 15. He had gripes, but he was one of the four best guards ever. To say he wasn't better than Allen and Miller is just silly to me.
