I'll walk it back a bit and say it's not totally Kobe's ego that keeps him from taking a reduced role.

Dirk is making playoffs and kg is just happy to be a mentor. Kobe is not going to stay any longer on a non playoff team and although he does help young players a bit, he's not going to do it like KG because he has his own things going on
