we can also offer him the max stupid. just not that 5th year. but that doesn't really matter cause the new CBA is coming in 2 years and it would be in Melo's best interest to sign a 4 year deal with a player option. that way he can opt out after 3 with his bird rights intact and get the Lakers to reup him with a new max deal that'll pay him much more than the last 2 years on the 5 year deal would. also note that the Lakers loyalty in paying Kobe $50 mil over the next 2 years shows Melo that this organization is loyal to its stars and will pay them when they get up there in age. 33 year old Melo should still be good enough to get another max deal or at the very least a contract extention that'll pay him alot more than the $30 mil he'd get that last year with NYK.
