you never see Kobe ranked that high, the consensus is that he is fringe top 10 and nothing has happened since he retired to change that

The fact that he constantly gets brought up in these talks even with him trying to avoid it (like the interview in the OP, for starters) shows that many believe otherwise. Personally, I think Jordan is clearly better than either and people only bring up LeBron (the closest anyone has gotten to dethroning Jordan's GOAT status, I'll admit) and Kobe (the closest to MJ in terms of skillset, playstyle, and personality) just for the sake of debating but these exist and will continue to exist when another challenger (Giannis? Zion?) enters the field... it is what it is

Anyway, I've seen Kobe ranked everywhere, I've seen that 6-8 sweet spot more in recent years. A lot of media publications do have him in that 9-12 range (SLAM is the only one I can think of that had him higher and that was based off of several people's opinions, not just one like most media lists you see online) but I doubt that's the consensus with the average person. A better way of phrasing my post is that you'll often see Kobe ranked everywhere and it's not changing anytime soon. It's not that hard to argue placing him in the top 7-8, and it's also not that hard to disparage what other top 10 caliber players (outside of MJ) accomplished as well since not all eras, awards, and numbers are equal. Context matters more than anything else and in the end it's just a subjective list based off of one's personal preferences and values
