I don't think anyone eats bear meat... So they probably killed it because they could... cacs are bloodthirsty like that.

Human men possess an instinct that compels them to hunt animals, usually succeeding in a hunt produces dopamine in the brain(pleasure) and since human men are competitive they search for more quality hunting animals to get better pleasure or bragging rights. It all goes back to when a teenage boy took down his first wildebeast and was seen as a man to the entire tribe, the tougher the animal the better the rep. So a vicious predator like a bear being taken down is considered a great thing.
