Library of Congress to stop using term 'illegal alien'

Library of Congress to stop using term 'illegal alien'
750x422

The Library of Congress, saying a once common phrase had become offensive, announced it will no longer use “illegal aliens” as a bibliographical term.

The library will now use “noncitizens” :dead: and “unauthorized immigration” :mjlol: :mindblown: when referring to individuals and the larger phenomenon of people residing in the country illegally. The library called the words more precise as well as less offensive. :stopitslime:

The change was prompted by a group of students from Dartmouth College, who urged the Library of Congress to scrap the term. The group — known as CoFIRED, for the Dartmouth Coalition for Immigration Reform, Equality and Dreamers — was assisted by the American Library Assn. :snoop:

Melissa Padilla, a student in her last year at the New Hampshire university, recalls her freshman year, when she “decided to explore [her] identity as an undocumented immigrant.” :pachaha:

While researching the topic, Padilla realized she frequently read the words “illegal alien.” She contacted fellow members of CoFIRED, and they made their appeal to the Library of Congress in 2014. “I think a university should be free of the racist phrases I heard growing up,” she said. :dahell: :why: :beli: :mindblown: :wtf:

The Library of Congress established the catalog subject heading “aliens, illegal” in 1980 and revised it to “illegal aliens” in 1993.

Though the latter has been heard frequently during the current presidential campaign — along with “illegals” — it has fallen out of favor in the news media and elsewhere, and the Library of Congress noted the trend in an executive summary released on March 22.

“The phase illegal aliens has taken on a pejorative tone in recent years, and in response, some institutions have determined that they will cease to use it,” the executive summary said. “For example, in April 2014 the Associated Press announced that illegal would not be used as a descriptor for any individual.”

A number of news organizations made the change as well, including The Times, which no longer uses “illegal” to describe people but does use the term “illegal immigration.”

i honestly don't care what they call them. i personally prefer undocumented migrant or illegal immigrant to "alien" for anyone. alien is a dehumanizing term for anyone. i don't think noncitizen is very accurate as that could mean many things.

changing what they call them isn't going to change anything, nor is continuing to label them aliens.

that's why i said noncitizen isn't accurate. there is a way to be more accurate without calling them aliens though.

you mean the way we've been doing it for 30 years? :francis:
that doesn't make it right. :yeshrug:

i think illegal immigrant or undocumented immigrant is exactly what they should be labeled. i don't think alien is a term that should be used anymore. not just the hispanics either, there plenty of illegal immigrants from the caribbean that i don't want labeled aliens.

This might be a dumb question but Hypothetically if I wanted to sneak into Mexico, or maybe Cuba and I get to their borders and they find me in some dudes trunk would they hit me with the :scust: and deport me back? Or the :manny:.

Make sense. I don't want to move there anyways. I just like asking hypothetical questions. If I did I would have to learn another European language. I already got one slave master tongue I don't need another.

mexico has very aggressive immigration laws and they will treat you far less humanely than america would treat a mexican crossing illegally unless you bribe the officer. basically anything can be paid off by a bribe in mexico, but be prepared to pay lots of bribes lel. idk about cuba. i've honestly never heard many stories about people sneaking into cuba to actually live there. :jbhmm:
