Its basketball. Why should he say anything? When athletes and celebrities do, people tell them to shut up and just do their job.
Part of the reason people like Jim Brown, Muhammad Ali and others are so revered is precisely because they speak up and weren't afraid to express their personalities.
I respect the talent of guys like Kobe and Jeter, but they're weak corporate puppets. Their bland-ness allows them to be the perfect neutered, soulless dollar-generating vessels that they are.
I guess it's good for them in a way. But in my view it limits their potential influence and ability to do great things. It's cowardly...the way I see it. But I get that on the coli...and to many people...they just revere the money. But not expressing yourself honestly to protect endorsements and such...that's basically the same as selling out.
There are times to speak up and times to keep quiet. I think guys like Kobe (and Jordan) should speak out about certain things, but this retirement stuff? Kobe should have just played the season out.
