I remember my school made me do this in first grade
I ended up bringing sweet potato pie and all the white/asian kids were making fun of me and refused to eat it because they thought it looked nasty
We had to do an International Fair in 6th grade. All the black kids, (except the Haitians) chose random countries.
In 7th grade, we had to bring in something from our "heritage". I brought an issue of Jet.
The teacher was excited, and thought Jet was a magazine from Africa. She was disappointed to learn it was an American magazine.
In hindsight, it's a shame these white teachers give these assignments, and don't take into consideration that African American children don't know which countries in Africa they come from. Yet these assignments keep happening.
