2015 NBA Mock Draft 1-10

1. Minnesota Timberwolves- Karl-Anthony Towns, F/C, Kentucky #12 Piscataway, NJ

Despite Flip Saunders’ desire to draft Jahlil Okafor whose old school low post style is preferred, the entire organization is pulling for him to select Towns, an agile big man who is better suited to the smaller, faster paced style. Towns offers the team versatility and much needed rim protection. Learning from Kevin Garnett can only help.

2. Los Angeles Lakers- Jahlil Okafor, C, Duke #15 Chicago, IL

Even though there are rumors that LA may want D’Angelo Russell or even trade the pick in a potential blockbuster here, Okafor was the consensus #1 pick for much of the season for a reason. His low post game reminds many of Tim Duncan and has a championship pedigree. His fit with Julius Randle is questionable at best, but at this stage of LA’s rebuild, it’s about collecting the best talent and then sorting it out later.

3. Philadelphia 76ers- D’Angelo Russell, G, Ohio State #0 Louisville, KY

Nobody really knows what GM Sam Hinkie is thinking. This should be an obvious pick given their glaring need at guard, but the 76ers are in seemingly eternal asset collection mode. With a boatload of assets and money, Philadelphia can still afford to avoid a need-based selection, but they still have to build a team, and Russell’s shooting will make life easier for their bigs, whoever they’ll be.

4. New York Knicks- Kristaps Porzingis, F, Spain #6 Liepaja, Latvia

This is where the draft truly starts. The honeymoon is over for Phil Jackson after the Knicks had their worst season in franchise history. Assuming this pick isn’t traded (Knicks would love to trade this), Phil opts to go after Porzingis who models his game after Kevin Garnett and while he’s high risk, could be the most talented player in this draft in a few years. Mario Hezonja is also a possible option here (I’d pick Hezonja, but Porzingis could make Phil look bad if he blows up).

5. Orlando Magic- Mario Hezonja, F, Spain #8 Dubrovnik, Croatia

No prospect in this draft is more confident in his own abilities than Mario Hezonja. Despite a lack of consistent playing time at BC Barcelona, Hezonja offers a tantalizing combination of shooting and athleticism, giving him major versatility on almost every team. The Magic could absolutely use the shooting and best of all, it permanently leaves Aaron Gordon at the PF spot. If his handles improve even slightly watch out.

6. Sacramento Kings- Emmanuel Mudiay, G, China #0 Kinshasa, Dem. Rep. Of The Congo b/w Dallas, TX

After opting to choose China over SMU, the onetime top HS prospect opened some eyes in his limited time at Guandgong, but many still don’t know what to make of him. The Kings have been shopping this pick and while there are bigs who make more sense, Mudiay provides much needed PG depth (eerily similar in size to former King Tyreke Evans) and a long term solution at PG that could do wonders in a George Karl-led offense.

7. Denver Nuggets- Justise Winslow, F, Duke #12 Houston, TX

The Nuggets seem to be directly or indirectly at the center of several trade talks involving embattled PG Ty Lawson. With new head coach Mike Malone on board, they should be seeking tough, gritty players. Winslow took his game to another level during the NCAA Tournament showing he can be the best two-way wing in this draft. While the James Harden comparisons are a bit farfetched, he can be counted to bring it night in and night out, something this team was not doing during last season’s debacle.

8. Detroit Pistons- Stanley Johnson, F, Arizona #5 Fullerton, CA

This picked looked to be earmarked for PF until the Ersan Ilyasova trade, but now they can address SF by selecting Johnson, who would be much higher on this board if he could finish at the basket (his measurements didn't help). While I think the offense will be a bit slow to come for him, he will be one of the best young defenders in this class and can make this developing Pistons defense that much more formidable.

9. Charlotte Hornets- Frank Kaminsky, C, Wisconsin #44 Lisle, IL

With Charlotte acquiring both Nicolas Batum and Jeremy Lamb last night, there’s no need for Devin Booker who I originally slotted here. By most accounts, Charlotte is targeting Kaminsky. Reports of them shopping Cody Zeller and officially trading Noah Vonleh makes a need for a big man all of a sudden that much more pressing.

10. Miami Heat- Sam Dekker, F, Wisconsin #15 Sheboygan, WI

Pat Riley has a type. He tends to go after upper classmen who have a track record of producing and have shown they’re capable of winning at a high level. Enter Sam Dekker. His profile was raised significantly during his tournament run where he helped lead Wisconsin to the NCAA Championship game. SF seems to be more of a pressing need for the Heat given their interest in now free agent Monta Ellis and Riley was reportedly very impressed with Dekker's workout for them. Dekker may know he’ll get drafted this high; he shut down any other workouts with non-lotto teams.

11-20

11. Indiana Pacers- Trey Lyles, F, Kentucky #41 Indianapolis, IN

The Pacers decide to add the somewhat local product here in Trey Lyles. His stock has fluctuated anywhere from a Knicks trade target to early 20’s, but with David West opting out of his final year in Indiana, opportunity knocks for a player who can continue to help Indiana play faster and get younger as Paul George will hopefully be 100% healthy for next season. There are probably better PF’s on the board still (Portis) but the hometown guy rarely ever gets booed.

12. Utah Jazz- Myles Turner, C, Texas #52 Bedford, TX

The Utah Jazz traded away Enes Kanter at the deadline to give Rudy Gobert the starting job and to improve themselves defensively. Turner is pretty much the anti-Kanter. The Jazz were arguably the best defensive team post All-Star Break and much of that had to do with their front court. Adding in Turner would give them the best young defensive front court rotation in the league. While the Jazz could use more shooting, I think they will look for cheaper alternatives to fix that.

13. Phoenix Suns- Cameron Payne, G, Murray State #1 Bartlett, TN

The carousel at PG continues for Phoenix. They drafted Tyler Ennis only to trade him to Milwaukee, and Brandon Knight is an RFA with nobody really behind him. Payne can instantly lead their second unit as the Suns try desperately to avoid being stuck on the treadmill. They’re probably the biggest losers of the Charlotte /Portland trade as it means Frank Kaminsky will likely be off the board by this time.

14. Oklahoma City Thunder- Jerian Grant, G, Notre Dame #22 Silver Spring, MD

I feel this pick is definitely up for grabs, especially with guys like Frank Kaminsky and Cameron Payne off the board and still looming questions surrounding Willie Cauley-Stein. They’ve been linked to Cameron Payne this entire process but with him off the board, I have them picking a combo guard who can play right away next to Russell Westbrook and give them a sense of stability they didn’t have with Jeremy Lamb and don’t have now with Dion Waiters.

15. Atlanta Hawks - Devin Booker, G, Kentucky #1 Grand Rapids, MI

I very much thought this would be a do-over pick for the Hawks in terms of landing another big man after they traded Adreian Payne to the Timberwolves mid-season. However, with Sefolosha and Korver’s injuries and John Jenkins likely not coming back as well as DeMarre Carroll being a question mark, that leaves a wide open door for a wing to come in and hopefully contribute. While Booker’s main asset is his outside shooting, he’ll have to do better defensively to maintain a spot in the rotation, but Atlanta has shown they can make mediocre defenders look decent.

16. Boston Celtics- Willie Cauley-Stein, C, Kentucky #15 Spearville, KS

I’m pretty sure Boston won’t be picking in this slot as they’re desperately trying to move up. With Trill at 16, they might as well stay at this spot. Danny Ainge doesn’t have to do anything as the medical reports send WCS’s stock tumbling down to a team looking to overhaul their front court and add much needed defense. If WCS were to miss extended time, the Celtics could withstand it for now as they’re still a developing team. Easily the biggest steal of the draft.

17. Milwaukee Bucks- Bobby Portis, F, Arkansas #10 Little Rock, AR

The Bucks are looking to move up in this draft, dangling John Henson and even Michael Carter-Williams as trade bait. They could use a true center, but if they can’t get that, they can add a versatile big man in Portis to replace who they just recently traded away in Ersan Ilyasova. The Bucks have depth at the wing spots and if they want a true C they can get a project in round 2. In the meantime, Portis can be of major help in traditional lineups and small ball (which they’ll be playing plenty of given their roster construction).

18. Houston Rockets- Tyus Jones, G, Duke #1 Apple Valley, MN

This was one of the first rumored promised picks during this entire process. The 2015 NCAA Tournament Most Outstanding Player was not shy when the lights got bright as he led Duke to a National Title, and while it will be harder for him to get his shot off, his ability to perform in the clutch will be a massive boost to a Rockets team that was without their PG Patrick Beverley for the entire postseason run. He’s a shoo-in as a solid backup PG who could start in a pinch alongside James Harden.

19. Washington Wizards- Delon Wright, G, Utah #55 Los Angeles, CA

While the need for a PF sticks out sorely, do not overlook John Wall and his recovery from a fractured wrist. As it is, they don’t have much behind Wall at PG. Delon Wright is big enough to where he could play alongside Wall at times. While his jumper is questionable, so was John Wall’s, and eventually he managed to improve it. The same can be done with Wright; in the meantime, he’s a stat filler who can round out their backcourt.

20. Toronto Raptors- Kelly Oubre, F, Kansas #0 Fort Bend, TX

This looks like a team ready to blow it up. If they choose to self-destruct, at least there won’t be any pressure for Oubre to produce. If they choose to make one more run, almost certainly this pick will be traded for more immediate help. While the Raptors also drafted Bruno Cabolco last year, both he and Oubre are interchangeable at the PF spot.

21-30

21. Dallas Mavericks- R.J. Hunter, G, Georgia State #22 Indianapolis, IN

With Rajon Rondo’s unceremonious exit from Dallas already done and over with, the assumption is of course, get a PG. However, Monta Ellis is opting out of his deal and Chandler Parsons had microfracture surgery not too long ago. If neither are available, there’s no true scoring threat at the wing. R.J. Hunter was better than he showed last season at Georgia State and may excel again now that he won’t face double and triple teams the way he did in college. He can start from day 1, key on a team clearly trying to win now.

22. Chicago Bulls- Justin Anderson, G/F, Virginia #23 Fredericksburg, VA

New Head Coach Fred Hoiberg could never stress defense as much as Tom Thibodeau did. However, Hoiberg is much freer with his offensive game plan. Anderson was one of the best shooters on a very impressive Virginia team last year. Injuries may scare Chicago off (they’ve had enough of them), but Hoiberg knows very well about his collegiate production and could soon step in as a key member of Chicago’s rotation. The Los Angeles Lakers among others would love to move up for him.

23. Portland Trail Blazers- Rondae Hollis-Jefferson, F, Arizona #23 Chester, PA

For all of his athletic talent and defensive prowess, RHJ falls on this board because of his inability to shoot. With the Trail Blazers dealing Nicolas Batum for Gerald Henderson and Noah Vonleh, Portland seems to be reverting back into transition mode. That means they can work on RHJ’s jumper while giving him time on the floor to establish himself as a plus defender. Even though I’m not a Vonleh fan, assuming LaMarcus Aldridge departs, they’ll give Vonleh every opportunity to succeed.

24. Cleveland Cavaliers- Luka Mitrovic, F, Serbia #9

Admittedly, this pick comes out of left field, but there are reports that the Cavaliers are interested in Mitrovic as a draft and stash candidate. If Kevin Love does decide to leave this off-season, perhaps they’d be interested in letting him develop stateside. A bit of a tweener, he will struggle early on, but we may not know how he does for a couple more years most likely.

25. Memphis Grizzlies- Jarell Martin, F, LSU #1 Baton Rouge, LA

Supposedly Martin had received a draft promise from a team in the mid-first round. While I don’t think it was Memphis, they showed heavy interest in him throughout the draft process. I don’t know why they choose to pick him over a shooter especially when they should give Jarnell Stokes more PT, but maybe they’re hedging their bets and adding depth in case Marc Gasol decides to go elsewhere this summer.

26. San Antonio Spurs- Kevon Looney, F, UCLA #5 Milwaukee, WI

Very good prospects just happen to fall to the Spurs. Looney, for all of his rawness as a basketball player, led all freshmen in double doubles. The tools are there. He just needs to be molded correctly. While they could use a guard to off-set the potential departures of Manu Ginobili, Danny Green and Cory Joseph, this is where we figure out how much Kyle Anderson has learned in his rookie season.

27. Los Angeles Lakers- Joseph Young, G, Oregon #3 Houston, TX

This pick is supposedly promised to Young, but that’s IF LA doesn’t move the pick first. The Lakers struck gold last year drafting Jordan Clarkson with the 46th pick. This year they add potentially the Isaiah Thomas of this year’s draft. He’s not a pure PG but when he’s on, he can take over a game offensively for stretches.

28. Boston Celtics- Rashad Vaughn, G, UNLV #1 Minneapolis, MN

It wouldn’t shock me if he were drafted higher. In fact, I really tried to figure out a place in the top 20 for him. Even though Boston has an upgraded version of Rashad Vaughn in Marcus Smart, it doesn’t hurt to add depth. Vaughn, 18, could spend much of his season in D-League like James Young did, but if nothing else arises, Vaughn could be a big time trade chip along with their stash of Brooklyn Nets draft picks.

29. Brooklyn Nets- Montrezl Harrell, F, Louisville #24 Tarboro, NC

A true energizer, Harrell adds size and toughness to a front court whose toughness has been questioned at times. While they could use a player with more upside given how many picks they won’t have in the next few years, this is a win now team and Harrell can be a spark plug off the bench giving them a lift during some stretches.

30. Golden State Warriors- Mouhammadou Jaiteh, C, France #14 Pantin, France

The Warriors are fresh off of a 2015 Championship. They’re way more likely to package this pick along with a contract such as David Lee’s to free up space under the luxury tax. In addition to Lee possibly being traded, they also could potentially lose Marreese Speights to free agency, so Jaiteh’s offensive game can be a suitable replacement for Speights. Jaiteh would love to play right away, but Golden State can be conservative with him. After all, they’re champions.
