Common British/Welsh/Scottish names like Williams, Jones, Smith etc., are very common amongst black Americans since most of us had ancestors that were enslaved by early arriving English/Scottish people.

Most whites, especially outside the South are recent arrivals compared to us and they often have last names black folks don't have.

Weren't many, if any, Greek/Polish/Italian etc., slave owners...so of course you're not going to see Rashad Stamos, DeAndre Krzyzewski or Jamal D'Antoni......more like Rashad Smith, DeAndre King and Jamal Davis.

Some blacks had ancestors enslaved by non English/Gaelic (Scottish and Irish) speaking people, like Germans. You'll see brehs with names like Weber or Wagner. Probably no Eichmann, Braun or Mueller though.
Chief Keef's last name is Dutch so I wonder if he has roots in New York. Most Black Chicagoans came from Mississippi so that'll be interesting.

Only knew one Jenkins as a kid. He was definitely southern. The Dallas County judge is Clay Jenkins (dad was Warwick Jenkins so you know there's gotta be some Civil War blood around there somewhere).

Only white Williams I can even think of is that actress Michelle....

Smith and Jones seem common among white AND black people.

Freeman makes sense because many of our ancestors gave THEMSELVES that name after slavery ended (Freeman = Freedman = Freedmen etc).

Washington and maybe Jefferson are probably the two blackest names out there. I have never met a non-black Washington and don't remember any Jefferson's either.
Hayley Williams from the band Paramore. She's from Tennessee

I’ve never met any black people with my last name that I wasn’t related to. I’ve met only 2 white people with it though. My mother’s maiden name is common af though.

Definitely possible. Names like his (Cozart) are relatively rare in the US so it would be a lot easier for him to trace his people. Plus the Chicago/Mississippi thing....might have some NY kin for sure.

My last name is Irish and I got the 23andme results to show there's a little blood attached to it.

Mom's last name is an old Scottish clan name that's reasonably common.

The furthest "north" my fam went before World War II was probably South Carolina/north Georgia (and that was Pre-Civil War before the ancestors got sold to Texas and Louisiana). The last names make sense for us.
