What is the story? the doc didn't really show why he was so beloved.

Not everyone brothers. There were people who actually looked at him as a hood legend or a legend in the making.

mostly talking about his family, i think his mother truly cared but his brother had dollar signs in his eyes

I disagree.

If a really well liked, well respected person who represented your neighborhood, school, etc. . . got capped at an early age, and had a ton of potential to do great things, I think people would be really sad.

Especially back then in the days before the internet and cable tv destroyed people's ability to be empathetic. (Yes, cable existed, but it was for people with some money back in 1984).
