Google it.Where is the study that states a black family is better off with a black doctor
There are plenty.
Google it.Where is the study that states a black family is better off with a black doctor
I read a study a while back that said, black doctors are best doctors in general, because they're most empathetic hold the least amount of biases....
Black people in general are not used to messing up, and getting away with it, and we have to jump through more hoops to succeed, and we know our performance in any field will be closely scrutinized, so if we have any kind of decent job, we’re going to be on our P’s and Q’s. White people aren't used to facing repercussions.
Breh it gets deeper than that.I also don't have the stats but I remember reading that black folk are also less likely to be believed when they state their pain/symptom/problems. This can lead to misdiagnosed or even malignant care. It's one of the reasons that meme with the nurse dancing last week caused so much anger on black twitter.
I wonder then if black doctors will humanize patients -- especially black patients -- in a way that non-black doctors won't thereby leading to better diagnosis and outcomes.
Man that's what I'm all about....Me and my old boss (also black) used to half joke that ASCVD gave you like 5% off top once you put African American. Health disparities is an under appreciated topic and the black maternity stuff is just the tip of the ice berg these candidates are only willing to acknowledge.
1619 Project had some of the studies and info in them; NYT and WSJ generally do a pretty good job of synthesizing the information.Man that's what I'm all about....
I'm trying use big data to make a case for health disparities...
Problem is....
Just like much of the scientific literature and research...
No one really reads it aside from other academics.
Who really goes on pubmed regularly, or reads that stats from their local public health office?
The worst part is when the news takes a study or public health stat then completely botches the story, because they didnt read or understand the article right.![]()
This literature was in a popular nursing textbook up until recently. Can't remember if it was shared here or I was just watching pbs one night but they did studies and Doctors didn't understand that minorities felt pain the same as whites was and the same with women experiencing pain vs men

Publisher apologises for 'racist' text in book
Which means a shyt ton of nurses were taught that black people feel less pain, so they're lying to get their hands on drugs.

We were talking about the concept of biased algorithms in 6F6C, a couple weeks ago.
It doesn't even have to be the developers. The probably can be 100% non-racist, but it's all based on existing data, and if the existing data was formed in a racist context then the algorithm will come to many of the same racist conclusions no matter how non-racist the actual language of the program is.Algorithms share the same racist, anti-Black biases as the society as a whole.
From the developers and programmers who create the system, to the deisgners who choose what factors to consider: racism is still going to be present.
Turning it into an algorithm or program won't remove the bias.
The issue is that most of the algorithms are developed on contract by big companies and governments. You don't just need the right developers who understand the inherent biases in the system and know how to combat them, you also need a way of getting those people the big contacts and contracts. We need to be funding counter-racist AI/Aalgorithm tools
There’s plenty of black Brehs who can do this, they just need money in their pocket
I remember when I got my hernia repaired, the surgeon was an old-school Black doctor, the anesthesiologist was a younger Black doctor, and the nurse who prepped me before they put me down was a young Black man. No lie I felt calmed and more comforted going into that surgery than I think I would have otherwise. And there are plenty of good white/asian/latin doctors out there, it's just an emotional thing for me at least.I read a study a while back that said, black doctors are best doctors in general, because they're most empathetic hold the least amount of biases....
I thought the same thing when I first read that Black folk weren't getting prescribed pain meds as often. Wild.Breh it gets deeper than that.
There's a prominent theory that a major reason, why Black people aren't as strung on opioids as nonblacks, is because they're not typically believed to be in pain...
The lack of pain prescriptions prescribed, collectively shielded us from higher prevalence or share of opioid addictions.
So racism actually protects us at times.
Racism might have spared black and Latino communities from new opioid epidemic, drug abuse expert says
