It still amazes me that there are steelers fans that think that there was nothing wrong with lebeau's scheme. Yall are okay with giving opposing offenses 7-8 yards at will on any pass attempt at any given time. The game has changed even more so in the past 4 years or so to give passing offense a distinct advantage and dikk never adapted and we have paid the price for it. I can't remember the last time our defense shut down or even remotely contained a good quarterback in his scheme. The last time that sticks in my mind was a couple years ago when we finally beat new england and brady by abandoning dikks scheme and actually played tight press coverage all game and won soundly. I remember thinking and hoping that was a turning point for lebeau to finally change but I was terribly mistaken.
The whole the defense is so complicated for young players thing is a whole other issue. We have been running the same damn scheme for like 20 years, a zone blitz here, a crossfire blitz there, how fukking hard can it be to learn? Opposing offensive coordinators sure don't have a problem slicing it apart. Adapt the scheme to fit your players, don't become a stubborn old man who runs the same thing even if the parts don't work, adapt, innovate, try something new. What's the fukking point of even drafting rookies for defense when they dont hit the field until their already gonna be free agents?
In a different era of the NFL, lebeau was really good but his time has past.
