The East has 9 teams over .500 while the West only has 7. The 13th seed in the East has lost 18 games. The 5th seed in the West has lost 19. The 8th seed in the East is over .500 and is 11.5 games out of 1st place. The 8th seed in the West is under .500 and is 24.5 games out of 1st place: NBA.com - 2015-2016 Conference Regular Season Standings. Not only that, everyone outside of the top 4 in the West are weak. The East has 9 to 11 tough teams.
You do know the Cavs have overachieved this season, right? They've had several starters and key players either coming off injuries or being injured and had to learn new offensive and defensive sets midway through the season with even less time because of a 9-day (All-Star) break after their coach was fired, yet they're still 1st in a tough conference.

Comparing basketball to football is a bad argument though. It's 5 against 5 compared to 11 against 11 and you only play one side of the ball. Too many variables to make any comparisons. Really the only North American sport you can use as a comparison is ice hockey (baseball is turn based and if the ball gets hit always from you there's little, if anything you can do to help on defense)
