And very few if any teams had a great frontcourt duo, most had either or combinations like - Malone and Ostertag, Kemp and Johnson, Barkley and West

Nope, Greg Ostertag wasn't making anyone pay in the post, neither were the Davis duo, or Oakley, Johnson, West, Thorpe etc. And thanks to the spacing of having two interior players, it would be easier to defend them with todays zone rules.
There were a lot of PFs who could hit the faceup and nothing else.
