My star player would only attempt layups and wide open mid-range jumpers.

This dude Lebron does not have a polished enough offensive game to put up 20-30 shots a game and keep up that FG %. There is no way that he can put up significantly better numbers than more offensively gifted players like Durant and Kobe (in his prime) if he took more shots. Lebron is fortunate to have Wade and Bosh because if he didn't, he would get exposed in terms of FG %. This 'what if' fool needs to check himself and fall back.
