He's a decent actor who's starred in a ton of great movies. I don't think theirs any other actor who goes from working with Scorcese, to Ridley Scott, Sam Mendes, Quenton Tarantino, etc. like he does.

He's probably the best "natural" actor working today. But when he does a movie with someone who comes from an "acting" background.. he tends to look weak.. Like when Kate Winslet completely blew him off the screen in Revolutionary Road.

Let's not go too far.

His strength is in the projects he picks and the directors he works with. He's in a position to pretty much pick any film he wants and he consistently picks interesting projects. Similar to Brad Pitt and George Clooney.

But I wouldn't call him a GREAT actor. He is very good and a true movie star, but one of the GOATs? No, not at all.
