Regretful Trump voter admits that Trump has done 'nothing' after 100 days in office

Pennsylvania voters, who played a pivotal role in electing President Donald Trump in 2024, have voiced their discontent as he reaches the 100-day milestone of his presidency. The swing state's residents are increasingly critical of Trump's leadership.

Jay Smith, a former Trump supporter who lost his federal job at the IRS, expressed his disappointment with the administration to NBC News Philadelphia.

Article continues below

"I'm trying to make sense of it all. You bring in someone like Elon who talked a big game about wanting to make progress in the government, but the minute his Tesla stock drops 71%, he's out the door," Smith said. Smith questioned the president's choices: "If the president is gonna bring in people more worried about their stock prices then what they were brought in for, what are you really doing?"

The initial phase of Trump's latest stint in office saw the federal government experiencing swift and sweeping alterations, a barrage of executive orders delivering on campaign pledges, plus extreme measures targeting immigration, and exacerbating trade and culture wars.

Smith recounted how he once believed in Trump's promise to improve the nation. "It seemed like he actually cared about doing something best for the country. But now it just feels like it's all about me, me, me, Donald Trump," Smith stated.

The Philadelphia local had hoped that Trump would enhance the economy and advance veterans' benefits. "It goes against everything I expected when I voted in him," Smith declared.

However, he made it clear that his current disapproval of Trump isn't because he was laid off. "If I had gotten fired as part of cutting government spending, I would accept that, but he's not delivering on anything he said he would do."

Smith admitted that, while some executive orders Trump promised have come to fruition, the execution has left him unimpressed. "Prices are going up and we're in the middle of tariff war with a bunch of countries who used to be our steadfast allies. How do you make an enemy of Canada," Smith remarked, expressing his dismay at the current trade tensions.

Smith critiqued Trump's negotiation tactics as "juvenile way." He questioned the lack of diplomatic efforts asking: "I mean where was the attempt to talk to the heads of these other countries?"

Local governments scramble to replace federal disaster funding

April 30, 20255:34 PM ET

Heard on All Things Considered

Rebecca Hersher

The Trump administration canceled billions of dollars of grants that were supposed to help small towns across the U.S keep their residents safe from floods, wildfires and other extreme weather. In one small Maryland town, the loss of funding means people are trapped in harm's way.

MARY LOUISE KELLY, HOST:

The Trump administration canceled billions of dollars of grants that were supposed to help the country prepare for weather disasters. Towns, cities and tribes were counting on that money to protect residents from floods, wildfires, hurricanes. It's a particularly tough situation for small rural towns that do not have any other way to pay for such projects. NPR's Rebecca Hersher visited one such town.

REBECCA HERSHER, BYLINE: The Sun Valley Mobile Home Park in Rising Sun, Maryland, is at the bottom of a hill.

CALVIN BONENBERGER: So here's the trailer park right here, and you can see...

HERSHER: Calvin Bonenberger is the town administrator.

BONENBERGER: This is all low-income housing, and the flood level is up to the roof line of all of these properties. And so, remember when I was telling you...

HERSHER: This area has flooded over and over. In 2021, the flooding was so dangerous that people had to be rescued from their homes.

BONENBERGER: We're talking about water that was about this high. The water...

HERSHER: Like 3 feet.

BONENBERGER: Yeah, 3 feet.

HERSHER: The low-lying trailers aren't a safe place to live anymore. The town has a plan - help the remaining residents move to higher ground and turn the damaged area into a park. But fixing flooding problems in Rising Sun is expensive. It's not just the trailer park. The town's wastewater treatment plant also floods when it rains a lot and sends contaminated water into nearby streams. Fixing both problems would cost millions of dollars that Rising Sun just doesn't have. The town has fewer than 3,000 residents. It only collects about $1 million in taxes every year, says Bonenberger.

BONENBERGER: You know, not everybody's wealthy.

HERSHER: And so Rising Sun applied for federal grants, which took years of work, not only to get the application materials together, but also for Bonenberger and other town leaders to make the case to local residents, many of whom don't support federal involvement in local projects. This area voted overwhelmingly for President Trump.

BONENBERGER: I think it's safe to say that the people in this area, you know, they are conservative, and they do believe that there's too much government waste going on.

HERSHER: Bonenberger generally agrees with that. But in this case, asking for federal money made a lot of sense to him. The funds the town applied for were offered by the Federal Emergency Management Agency, FEMA, and they were for this exact purpose. FEMA's idea was to invest money before weather disasters to prevent even more expensive damage later. Studies have estimated that you spend $1 now to prepare, it saves about $7 later by preventing damage. And as the Earth warms up, extreme weather, like the heavy rain that causes flooding in Rising Sun, is only getting more common.

BONENBERGER: Our sewer plant is going to continue to overflow. And there has to be money to resolve it. We don't have the money to resolve it. That's what this money is for. This is an no-brainer.

HERSHER: Last year, Rising Sun won two grants - one to fix the sewer plant and another to fix the trailer park. It was a total of about $5 million, which was good news for people like Margaret Dunn (ph). She lives across the street from the Sun Valley Mobile Home Park.

UNIDENTIFIED CHILD: (Vocalizing).

MARGARET DUNN: Oh.

HERSHER: On a Wednesday afternoon, she was outside playing with her 2-year-old grandson and her son, Aaron (ph). She says, the floods have taken a toll on the area.

DUNN: We had a neighborhood with kids that played, and - you know what I mean? There was activity.

AARON: Yeah.

DUNN: Neighbors watched out...

AARON: Ice cream truck.

DUNN: ...For each other and stuff.

AARON: Yeah.

DUNN: That stuff is gone.

HERSHER: She points out that a lot of the trailers are still damaged. Warped coat hangers and waterlogged books sit on the porch of one. Another has insulation drooping from a giant hole in the siding. A lot of people have moved away. Some have stayed. The town was going to use the FEMA money to remove all the debris and turn the area that floods into a park instead, but now that money is gone. The Trump administration canceled the entire program. In a statement announcing the decision, FEMA called the grants, quote, "wasteful and ineffective." I asked Bonenberger what he thinks of that characterization.

In their eyes, this program was waste.

BONENBERGER: Right. I think I feel very strongly, and I think my personal belief is shared by a lot of people in this area. We all sort of suspected that probably our taxpayer money was not being used the way we would like it to be used. So with all this being said, I'm not looking to throw the baby out with the bathwater.

HERSHER: The baby in this case being the money for his town. He thinks FEMA was wrong to cancel Rising Sun's grants, but he still supports the larger effort to cut wasteful spending. The administration just needs to use a scalpel, he says, not a dull knife. At the same time, he's frustrated, and he's concerned about the safety of his residents every time it rains. If he had a chance to make his case to the administration, here's what he'd say.

BONENBERGER: Guys, this is dangerous. This is the whole reason why you put this funding out there.

HERSHER: FEMA did not respond to questions from NPR about why it deemed the grants wasteful or about the administration's larger approach to disaster preparedness. Rebecca Hersher, NPR News.

Charles Koch never uttered his name, but it was mighty clear that President Donald Trump was on his, and everyone else’s, mind Thursday night at a glitzy gala that might have as well have been Koch Con.

“With so much change, and chaos, and conflict, too many people and organizations are abandoning these principles and turning to power to solve problems,” said the 89-year-old billionaire industrialist behind some of the most formidable organizations on the political Right. “But we know from history, this just makes them worse.
People have forgotten that when principles are lost, so are freedom and progress,” he added at the gala convened in his honor by the Cato Institute, the libertarian think tank he founded.

Charles Koch has long been a foe of protectionism and an evangelist for free markets, competitive advantage, and mutual benefit. In fact, the remarks he delivered Thursday evening—just a few minutes of efficiently coded winks and nods sprinkled with quotes from philosophical favorites Friedrich Hayek and Frederick Douglass—could just as easily have come a decade ago or a decade later.

But they came in May 2025, at a moment when Trump and his economic team are engaging in some of the riskiest and costliest brinksmanship over global trade in a generation. And when the head of the second-largest private company in the United States speaks, there’s an oracle-like aura that demands parsing.

“You can see why we’re in the mess we are today,” Koch said. The “mess” was as explicit as he was willing to get in regard to a pursuit of power at all costs that led to the long-building Trump’s movement and what has unfolded in the first months of his second term. The President marked his 100th day in office this week with a report from his Commerce Department that showed the economy shrunk in his first quarter. His trade war has shifted buying patterns, shaken U.S. consumer confidence, and rattled the stock market. Consumers are already starting to notice costs rising from Trump’s tariff strategy, which has been all over the map: adding some here, delaying them there, canceling them here, upping them there.

It is, to those who share Koch’s worldview, government intervention run amok.

Koch and free-market ideals have long been wed. Charles, along with his late brother David Koch, has been a force in conservative circles for a half century, funding and fueling dozens of efforts to help small-government causes. Americans for Prosperity—a conservative powerhouse of volunteers, ads, and door-knockers—is one of the backbones of the grassroots efforts that have bolstered Republicans for decades—and AFP’s partner groups targeting veterans, young voters, voters of color, and women have all proven efficient investments for the Kochs and their circle of high-dollar pals.

But it has always been a mistake for Republicans to assume blind political fealty from Charles Koch and his lieutenants. Koch-linked groups helped muscle through Trump’s first-term tax cuts and they were back in the field trying to push their extension even before Trump came back to Washington. Trump also worked with the Koch orbit on a massive rewrite of the criminal justice system and Koch-minded activists cheered on Trump-era efforts to let terminally ill patients access medical treatments that had not yet fully cleared FDA vetting.

Yet the Koch groups were patently against Trump’s ban on migrants from countries with Muslim majorities, objected to his hardline view of immigration, and fought for legal status for Dreamers.

In fact, the Koch orbit did its best to ignore Trump, sitting out the 2016 general election after flirting with other potential nominees who came up short. Shunned by the ultra-rich circle, Trump claimed he had turned down their invitation to join a closed-door summit that summer, but it was clear an offer had never been extended. In 2020, the Koch universe went to ground on the White House race, too, saying their focus was the Senate. And four years later, their collection of groups spent $42 million to unsuccessfully keep Trump from becoming the nominee for a third time. Its flagship political arm, Americans for Prosperity, dumped almost $160 million into political and policy advocacy in the last cycle without lifting a penny to help Trump.

Despite his recent setbacks on the political stage, Koch and his fans are not shying from the fight. When a hype video played before his speech, the crowd laughed when criticism from Bernie Sanders, Tucker Carlson, and Lou Dobbs played on the screens—a nod to the fact that Koch is reviled by those who otherwise share zero in common, yet has not backed down. And judging from the applause in the room when Cato president and CEO Peter Goettler said explicitly what Koch merely waved at, the feistiness is not fading.

“We will always oppose when a policy is moving in a direction that contradicts these principles,” Goettler said. “When the President disappears people without due process, or enacts extra-legal tariffs that threaten business and prosperity around the world, or targets individual law firms for retribution and calls into great danger to the rule of law, we’ll stick to our principles, speak out, push back, and oppose it.”

The free-market fanboys and libertarian aficionados have spent almost a half century decrying the exact meddling that Trump is now engaging in. A hands-off-the-market approach has been sacrosanct for these wonks. Lost on no one was the fact that Koch was in town—a rare visit, really—to accept the 2025 Milton Friedman Prize for Advancing Liberty, named in honor of the economist who was pretty strident in his opposition to tariffs.

Tariffs that have come to define Washington over the last few weeks.

Is blaming the party that won for making them look bad.
