did you actually watch the fight breh. It was natural instinct on his part to even find the piece and get up. He was trying to get the piece in, try doing that with your equilibrium sent to all hell. It was conditioning that failed Mike the most in that fight though, he didn't quit/look for a way out.
I remember a black and white photo of Mike knocked out on the mat by his sparring partner a week before his loss to Buster. We all blew it off but after Buster knocked him out I remembered that photo and being like

He did get up, but he was also the equivalent of a drunk after sustaining those KO punches. Understanding was there but his mind wasnt right enough to help put it together physically.
at an out of shape guy getting hammered with a video game combo by a 240 lb + man after an already grueling battle (which should have ended earlier by KO
) and expecting him to get up like its all good. Its a testament to Mike that he was even able to get up, yet alone recognize he needed his mouth piece. He probably would have beat the count skipping it but again you could tell by the glassy look in his eye that thoughts were all types of scattered. The ref would have still called the fight either way. Roy Jones was the same way getting up from the Tarver KO punch.

. The guy wasnt in shape. I'm surprised Mike lasted against Buster as long as he did, and still was able to KO him even though the ref was trippin.
