Girl, 14, dies ‘after undergoing breast surgery without her father's knowledge’

A 14-year-old girl has died in
Mexico after allegedly undergoing an un-authorised breast enlargement operation.
Schoolgirl Paloma Nicole Arellano Escobedo died in hospital on Saturday in the city of Durango a week after the surgery.
Paloma's cause of death was reportedly marked as complications due to a respiratory illness on her death certificate, but her grief-stricken father, Carlos Arellano, claims a breast augmentation was to blame and is demanding an investigation.
He said: 'Her death certificate falsely stated 'illness' as the cause of death in an attempt to cover up the truth.'
'They gave it to us right away. I don't know how they did it so quickly,' he said of the death certificate.
He alleges an operation was carried out without his knowledge and said he only found out at her funeral after discovering she had gotten breast implants.
Carlos claims that the surgery resulted in complications, causing his daughter to go into cardiac arrest.
'I thought she had gotten COVID-19 on her trip to the mountains,' the father said, recalling that her mother had told him Paloma had tested positive and that they would be away for a few days without phone coverage.

Days later, he was told his daughter was in critical condition. When he went to the hospital to see Paloma, she was intubated and in an induced coma.
At the time he was told that she had suffered respiratory arrest due to Covid, which had caused brain swelling.
The girl's mother is understood to have consented to the operation, news outlet Antena3 reports.
The heartbroken father filed a complaint after his daughter's funeral when he realised there was more behind his daughter's death, claiming there was a 'cover-up.'
'I demand that all those responsible be investigated', he said.
Authorities have confirmed they are investigating Paloma's death.
The tragedy comes just two months after a 40-year-old woman died after undergoing liposuction that was performed by a renowned plastic surgeon in Brazil.
Natália Cavanellas, a well-known businesswoman, had the operation at San Gennaro Hospital in Mooca, São Paulo but went into cardiac arrest before she was declared dead.

The surgery was carried out by Dr. Edgar Lopez - who according to his website profile - claims to be an expert in high-definition liposuction, which is also known as liposculpture, and mammoplasty.
Lopez also claimed to have been the first doctor in the South American nation to have used Renuvion, a minimal invasive technology that tightens the skin whether a person undergoes liposuction or not.
In a similar case, a young mother died last year after suffering a 'frankly barbaric' botched Brazilian butt lift operation in a Turkish clinic last year.
Demi Agoglia, from Salford, Greater Manchester, flew to Istanbul in January 2024 with her partner Bradley Jones after spotting a celebrity-endorsed advert on social media offering cut-price cosmetic plastic surgery.
But tragically the 26-year-old mother-of-three died in hospital three days after operation from a suspected microscopic fat embolism, where injected fat leaks into the bloodstream.
After hearing from an expert witness in the inquest that Ms Agoglia's tragic death could amount to 'manslaughter', a coroner said he would be writing to Health Secretary Wes Streeting to take measures to stop young women travelling to Turkey for such procedures.
'I feel that something needs to be done to stop this frankly barbaric medical practice being conducted to such low standards which would not be tolerated within the United Kingdom,' John Pollard told Ms Agoglia's family at Bolton Coroner's Court in December.
