On Monday, news broke that a father had let his 20-year-old daughter drown off a beach in Dubai because he did not want her to be touched by a strange man. The story, according to one source, is nearly two decades old.
According to the Guardian newspaper’s “Media Monkey”, the “story”, which came via Agence France-Presse, was lapped up by editors facing a slow news day, and quickly did the rounds, including onFRANCE 24.

But according to a source speaking to the Guardian the article, which originated on the websiteEmirates 24/7, was taken from an interview in which lifeguards recounted the strangest events in their careers.

“They mentioned this case of the Asian man who prevented his daughter’s rescue, but, and here’s the catch – it was from 1996,” the source said.

The story on Emirates 24/7 recounts (without giving a date to the incident) Colonel Ahmed Burqibah’s story of how a father had taken his wife and children to the beach for a picnic.

The children were swimming when the daughter got into trouble and started screaming for help. When two lifeguards went to help the woman, her father, described by Burqibah as a “tall and strong” Asian man, "started pulling and preventing the rescue men and got violent with them".

“He told them that he prefers his daughter being dead than being touched by a strange man” believing that “if these men touched his daughter, then this would dishonour her”, Colonel Burqibah told the website.

He said he believed the woman probably would have lived if the father had not intervened.

“She died unfortunately, at a time when she had a chance to live, especially that the rescue men were so close to her to pull her out of the water,” he said.

The father was later arrested by Dubai Police for stopping the rescue team from saving his daughter’s life and doing their job, Emirates 24/7 reported.

it's wild how time is just flying by. when they said it's two decades old it feels like another time, but that's 1995 though. shyt where did the time go.

Yeah, I hear ya, I've cut a lot of lines and crossed a lot of chicks off my list since then though. The specter of death and marriage approaches.

Not to be dark here, but imagine if she'd had made it out on her own. she might've been an absolute savage after that. but that's a tough parent, imagine how he was bought up if that's how he treated his own seed.
