Because people don't play the game in a way that makes talking worth it. I'd understand if people were talking about the match and calling out strategies and what not, but what the hell do I have to talk to a bunch of immature racists giggling over "Dude that's why I'm banging your mom" jokes? 
That's why when I use my mic I typically only have it on for party chat where I'm talking about the game, or stuff I care about with my boys. The hell with all that yelling over other people and listening to their annoying jokes all up in my ear. I can count on one hand the times were random people were actually using the mic to talk about the freakin game we were actually playing.

I remember playing Gears of War 2 and this British guy was cursing me out for not having a mic. Can't believe people make a big deal about this.
Most of the people I've encountered in online games are really stupid so I have no interest in talking to them. I understand the purpose of a mic but 9 times out of 10 people don't utilize their mics properly. Instead of relaying constructive information (i.e.: "There is an enemy hiding near the B flag") they're blasting loud rap music, having their baby cry on the mic, or they're cursing/screaming whenever they die. These things are really distracting and adversely affects the gaming experience. Whenever I play CoD and get into a game I immediately mute everybody.
On "Advance Warfare" I've had a group of people kick me out of their party because I was black (my character avatar was a black guy). They were like: "It's a n!gger. Kick him". If you're black and/or a female it's best not to have a mic anyway.

I've never had a problem with 12 year olds, racist shyt , or mic trolling on the ps4. The PS3 was a different story but honestly I run into more women then I do lil annoying kids now

I ONLY use the mic for GTA V. hell, I didn't even start fukking with the mic that came with the PS4, til I got GTA V next gen, and my nikkas wanted to play and communicate at the same time.
also, whats dope about PS4, is you can start a party on there and just talk to people you specifically know and not be able to hear anyone else. I really like that feature a lot.
