Today I learned that GTA and TLOU are considered in the same genre.

Do you agree?

I thought the distinctions ran a bit deeper than that.

How do we define genres?

Is it simply the perspective you are playing from?

Plants Vs. Zombies is a third person shooter. Bloodborne is an Action RPG.

Bloodborne is also a 3rd person shooter.

Plants VS zombies has just as many rpg elements as bloodborne.

By your logic PVZ and bloodborne are in the same genre.

In your opinion what makes bloodborn a rpg and PVZ a 3rd person shooter?

@HarlemRiverDrive told me that since they are both 3rd person with guns, that means they are the same genre.

He also told me that COD and Bioshock are the same genre.

Didn't make sense to me so I thought I'd get other opinions

TLOU is listed as a survival horror & action adventure game

GTA 5 is listed as a open world action adventure game

So I suppose he's right in a way that they share certain genre tropes, but the overall themes of those games are different. saying they're the same genre because they have guns seems like a gross over simplication though.....

That's what I thought.

Same goes for COD and Bishock.

They both are technically FPS, but they are so different that I wouldn't consider them comparable at all.

Totaly agree like I would consider battlefront and bF4 the same genre even though they have different perspectives.

But not in a million years would I compare infamous to uncharted even though they are the same perspective.

So many genres have been melded distinctions are becoming less relevant I think.

The OP is too broad to cover. There are a ton of root genres with an ever growing sub genre count.

I don't even know what yall are arguing about, but IMO every third person game with guns isn't a "third person shooter". it has to be a game where the shooting mechanics are the focus of the game

Technically all games with guns have cover though. What's considered a rpg? If all you needed to be considered an rpg is a skill tree then why is Zelda considered an action rpg?
