The OP is too broad to cover. There are a ton of root genres with an ever growing sub genre count.
Are genre definitions really that important to begin with anyway?

I think if we are gonna have different distinctions it is important to define them.

What would you consider a "root" and a "sub-genre"

Technically all games with guns have cover though. What's considered a rpg? If all you needed to be considered an rpg is a skill tree then why is Zelda considered an action rpg?
I agree wih you man. I guess I'm saying they both have stop and pop gears style cover mechanics. Where as say battlefield doesn't.(yes technically there is cover. But you know what I mean)

But I think classifying games is stupid anyway. A good game is a good game. I could care less about classifications. Not saying gtav and TLOU are actually the same genre.

There are too many genres to really draw a black and white definition of each. This entire thread is essentially the what is hip hop and what is rap argument.

How come those games get different distinctions beyond perspective and weapon choice but other games don't?

TLOU is based off stealth. Gears isn't.

Yet you claim they are the same genre

Why?

You don't have to play TLoU as a Stealth title. TLoU and Gears are both third person shooters. I COULD call them both Tatical Third Person Shooters cause the games are quite tactical, but I'm not that familiar with TLoU MP to say that.

I don't think it's important but I do find it to be more interesting than the majority of the threads in this forum. I find it interesting how years ago a game like the first tomb raider was considered a platforming puzzle game, now would be considered a 3rd person shooter.

You don't HAVE to play tenchu as stealth. Just as you CAN play through TLOU almost entirely stealth.

But beyond that you've allowed no leeway for the type of game beyond perspective when it comes to 3ps.

For you, if its 3rd person with a gun, its the same genre.

So why does that not hold true when the weapon is a sword? By your previous statements there should be no room for a stealth or action/adventure distinctions.

When I say it's not important I mean it's not important in regards to the quality of the game itself. Saying a games bad because it's a first person shooter is stupid, but classification is important in regards to marketing, reviewing, developing, etc

Indie games are not a genre and we should stop treating indie games as if indie is a genre.

I haven't had a problem with any of the other naming conventions we have really.

Turn based RPG and action RPG gives me a pretty good idea of the different mechanics at play in the games from those different genres.

TLoU and GTA are not in the same genre. Perspective does not equal genre.

TYRONE GA!
@HarlemRiverDrive told me that since they are both 3rd person with guns, that means they are the same genre.

He also told me that COD and Bioshock are the same genre.

IMO the addition of perspective made game classification more of a mess.
