The reason old people go so hard on the voting tip is because they remember what it was like to be in their teens/ early to mid 20s and the person they were.
After they stop cringing at the thought of their past selves they then realize that they can't leave the direction of the country in the hands of green, naive, idiots with little to no real world experience.
You call it being conservative, most people just call it growing up and realizing that everything that sounds good to you isn't good for you.
