he's the best thing they could have had in that position other than maybe Jesse Ventura or Bobby Heenan. Great heel commentator..but obviously he doesnt do that anymore and its tired.
Actually I do agree that he went overboard with constantly shouting puppies but that's it. He was a great heel announcer and him and JR played great off each other. IMO he was never the same after he played Captain Save a Ho for Miss Kitty.
He had a few great years as a commentator, followed by over a decade of making a fool of himself. I don't think this dude ever recovered from the Kat leaving him. 
He was kind of gay for Cripple H and Blandy for awhile...I mean it was getting out of hand with Blandy. He kept harping in on his looks week in and week out during the Evolution...it was SO fukkING bad. I had to press mute quite a few times.
He always loved the Rock face or heel..but he was gay for other two like I said though.
I remember this his commentary during Orton matches in 2004 was the definition of
saying shyt like "Oh no Randy Protect your beautiful Body" 
I haven't been able to stand Lawler since the Attitude Era and even then I found him annoying. JR was able to make it tolerable by roasting him when he would get to carried away.

Lawler from 1993 till around 98 was very good, IMO as a heel commentator/wrestler/personality. It was the late 90's/ early 2000's where he got lazy and fell off, he would still have his moments but by '02/03 he was basically a shell of what he once was..

I'm actually going back and watching all the Raw's, Smackdown's and PPV's from 2000 and Lawler is gold on commentary. So witty and has me crying with some of his remarks.
And by the sounds of it, all of his best stuff was pre '97?

Lawler was a mark for the Rock since 97. He wasn't gay with it like the dikk sucking for Blandy. He marked out for him face or heel based on his promos.
