The Phillies could be close to making a move with Chase Utley- just not the one everyone expected.

Jim Salisbury of Comcast Sports Nets posted on Thursday morning that he has a "hunch" that the Phillies and Utley could be close to a contract extension.

If true, the move would certainly be a surprising one. The general opinion around Utley and his future with the team was that he would either be traded at the deadline, or allowed to test the free agency market this winter.

An extension for a 34-year old who has a history of bad knees, however, wasn't something many fans thought was possible.

Here are some of the reasons Salisbury lists as to why he feels an extension could be close:

• A person with knowledge of the situation says the Phillies have had recent talks with Utley’s representation about a contract extension.

• Word in well-placed baseball circles is that the Phillies are not listening to trade offers for Utley.

• The decision to broaden second-base prospect Cesar Hernandez’ utility skills by having him play some outfield shouldn’t be underestimated, especially upon further review of the comment that GM Ruben Amaro Jr. made to CSNPhilly.com on Sunday.
:laff: A's want him, even if its going to be for only a rental, but the Phillies want to extend Utley and that :flabbynsick: core. We don't even have to get into that :flabbynsick: Ryan Howard contract. :whew: Utley at 2B with the A's would make the A's instant championship contenders, probably the best team in baseball. :lawd: :rudy: But, great job Ruben Amaro, I didn't think he could get any worse.

Foolish contract, but the Phillies should do everything they could to keep him.

He's God in Philly.

It wasn't him in charge at the time. He was assistant GM while Pat Gillick built the team that won the World Series and lost in another.

The year after Gillick left, he gave Howard 125 million. That was the first of many  moments during his tenure.

Attendance is already down. If they get rid of Utley it will be empty like the Vet was. This is strictly a business decision.

He should go but he won't.:manny:

Another topic that illustrates why talking baseball on this website is pointless. RAJ has made numerous bad moves over the last five years but extending Utley would not be one of them.

Utley's wRC+ this season is 137

For comparison Cano's is 140 and Pedroia's is 117

Utley is the one guy I'm OK with them extending (assuming it's a reasonable contract) especially if they were not planning on dealing him in the next week. Michael Young should definitely be gone next week and if they can get rid of Papelbon I'll be ecstatic but I doubt any teams will want his contract. I'd love to see Delmon Young gone too but I doubt there are any other teams interested in his services.

On the other hand I want to see RAJ make the most awful moves possible so ownership fires him but I feel like that is years away unfortunately

i have no idea what wrc+ is.. but there's no way utley is even close to cano even with cano being in a triple a lineup this year.

extending a 34 year old 2b is just not a good idea.. and utley hasn't been healthy since 09. plus no dh spot to hide him in..

but that entire infield is old as fukk. maybe that's what they're going with :yeshrug:
