There was no real hiding the fact that he had industry ties, therefore he's not really a plant. People have come to mistake having a deal before being big, with what an actual plant is. A plant is someone receiving marketing dollars from a major label and an all around major label push while being hailed as unsigned/independent yet already being signed.

Drake's position as a child star on Nickelodeon makes for an unusual situation, he most likely already had a publicist in place and connections at most labels so he had the resources to get a major MEDIA push before actually signing a record deal, but that doesn't make him a plant. Now if he inked the deal with Cash Money before So Far Gone instead of shortly after than he is a plant, but I don't think that's the case. He already had a management deal with Jas Prince, which would give him all the resources of a major label artist, but still no plant.

A plant is more along the lines of Macklemore, he has and had a joint deal with a major label while simultaneously using the "independent artist" label as one of his main marketing ploys.

Going by the definition that The Coli now uses for a "plant" 99% of every artist in every genre ever is a plant. Not many people really build a fan base and a career completely independent. Also, I don't give a shyt if someone is a plant if their music is dope. I'm not a huge fan of Drake but I like enough of his music, while artists like Kendrick and Cole who very well may have been plants I couldn't care less if they were or not, cause they make great music so it's not like we were force fed bullshyt.

You didn't get how the word plant was used.
Nobody talking about marketing dollars here.... at least not from the label.
put it that way

No I get how it was used, I'm saying the use of it in this thread and most of the time on this site recently is incorrect. What you described isn't an industry plant, it's simply marketing. The whole reason behind marketing is to make an impression and promote something to people. If millions of people are already talking about something there's no reason for a big media push.

And if the media is talking about something all the time, or radio is playing a song a lot, especially before it's actually popping, that's marketing dollars at work, so there is no talking about something being promoted in the media without taking into account the marketing dollars behind it.

Still incorrect.
If it's not from labels you can't get MTV to keep talking about you.
I said keep talking about you, I'm not just referring to getting spins, that there doesn't come from labels.

It must come from something......... more powerful!

Money talks no matter where it's coming from, so do the right connections. Jas Prince (thanks to his father) can get radio and TV to talk about any artist he's managing. So Far Gone dropped in February 09, Drake signed officially to Young Money in June 09, so for a former Nickelodeon star to be managed by the son of a very powerful music executive, it wouldn't be hard at all to get TV and radio to pay attention before an official major label deal.

Imagine if Puff's son managed a former Disney star, they'd be able to get plenty of media attention long before anything official was signed with Bad Boy or any other label.

EDIT: But it was probably really the blood oath Drake took agreeing to worship Lucifer and let music executives fukk him in his ass that did it. No other way to explain success.

Everyone is a "plant" from Drake to Cole to Thugger. Everyone has a deal when you think they're independent.

J.Prince rarely ever got his own artists on his own label on mtv.

but having a management deal with his son is supposedly way more powerful.:mjlol:
