If this scenario played out Mase woulda easily kept it up until at least 2003. Just think, Nelly came along a few years later in 2000 and killed. Mase was Nelly before Nelly with a bigger backing.

I remember some of the Hitmen saying that dude was basically "burned out" by the time they started working on the second album. That whole sound they had him jump on for the Bad Boy stretch that did well, was over. Had he signed somewhere else early on, when he was still on his COC sh*t, I think his career would've mirrored something like Killa's. But the whole Bad Boy tenure changed dude's whole direction. If anything, he was just used to prop Puff up and cover the bases that losing BIG left open for the label.

LOL @ Mase being done in the '00's. Ya'll do realize that The Neptunes had a huge run and the sing, songs female R&B featured hooks were keys to success during that era. I could see Mase eating good just off having Neptunes tracks and singles that possibly would've featured Lil' Mo, Missy, Ashanti, or even Beyonce. I could see Mase completely all over radio with songs that sounded like "Excuse Me Miss" or Nelly's "Dilemma". I could even see him doing songs with Nelly, Cee-Lo, Ludacris, Lil' Flip, Outkast etc.

Mase usually picked good outside producers so I could see him putting together a dope third album around 00/01 if he continued to use Neptunes/Kanye and got beats from Just Blaze/Timbaland. He would've competed well with whatever was popular around that time (Ja/Nelly/Jay/etc).
He would've still been relevant, Kanye basically took his whole rhyming blueprint (don't ask me how) and swag. Dude was killing it when he wanted to though, just like now. He just seemed over rapping at that point.

Haven't heard or seen this since high school and I graduated in 2000
Jay did 5 Mil in 98. NOTHING was stopping Jay-Z except perhaps Biggie living. And even then it wouldn’t have “stopped” him he just wouldn’t have been able to claim KONY
