By comfortable, you essentially make enough to afford everything you want. If you have a family, same applies. You’re far from struggling. Now let’s say you learn some information that’s supposed to be confidential and you find out an irresponsible idiot you don’t like is making twice as much as you. Do you stay quiet knowing you have a good job that pays more than enough? Do you speak up because you feel you deserve more? Mind you, if you speak up, you take the risk of being labeled a “troublemaker” and they may find a reason to get rid of you. On the flip side though, speaking up could force their hand to pay you more than the idiot. It’s a 50:50 chance though.

What would you do?

You have to be quiet. You're not supposed to know how much a colleague makes. Someone in HR or finance fukked up making that info public. Which you would then be asked how you got the info and either snitch or your job is in jeopardy anyway.
You have to lobby for more money on your own merits.

I wouldn't even view that person as a "idiot" in the first place. They found a way to finesse more paper. Now I'm going to become a bitter lame and hater because someone else makes more than me. IF you continue with this logic someone will always be making more than you who you may view as a "idiot" or "not responsible". It's a lot of entertainers and businessmen that aren't scholars but make bank. It's also a lot of poorer smart and well educated folks.

Also lets say you do get a raise someone else is going to view you as the idiot who doesn't deserve his spot. And the cycle of bitterness continues.

Just curious, does your job have published pay bands? They usually show the min/max and median for your job title and grade. I don't even think it'd be possible for someone at my same grade level to earn 2x my salary based on the ranges, unless they got promoted.

I'd try to get more data points, maybe find out what some more people are making. Did he used to be a manager? I've seen managers get moved to an individual contributor role and they usually keep the same pay, so they'll end up super high on the pay scale for the new role.
