I think the closest was Roc. He was in B-More and was a garbage collector. He was fighting drug dealers and his brother was a bum. Truth be told we didn’t need hood shows. We had too many hood movies, plus the music. Everybody was “keeping it real”.
Mannnn used to love Roc when I was a little kid.

Low-key Fox was slaying with In Living Color, Martin, Living Single, Roc, NY Undercover etc.

They always had them 2-part "on a special episode of...." shyts like when Clifton Powell guest-starred and Roc was tryna get him out the neighborhood because he had the yung bois in the dope game.

So there aren’t people who grew up in the hood who moved into nicer neighborhoods? Martin worked at the radio station and Gina was making a decent wage in her office job. They were middle class. So I assume Shanaynay who lived next door was making decent money too. And I assume Bruh Man wasn’t doing too bad for himself either.

That’s why I asked you how are you defining hood?

Bruh…lettuce take a closer look at some of the commerce that took place on Martin:

- Hustle Man was selling roasted pigeons on a stick that was marinated in molasses and Pork & Beans Juice.

- Bruh Man had Martin helping him sell bootleg Whitney Houston (misspelled) concert t-shirts.

- Sheneneh had to use power tools to give a customer a pedicure at her salon.

- “Marty Mart’s Meat Loaf & Waffles”. Nuff said.

This seems like an appropriate time to discuss this:

We got to have a talk about Buckwhite.

Buckwhite was only on a few episodes of Martin, but I think his inclusion alone establishes the ‘hoodness of the show.

Yes. People think hood means criminals and gangs. The majority of hood people were/are normal like the cast of Martin. Living in some middle class apartment, next to a Shenanay, dealing with a hustle man, a bruh man, a goofy ass security guard like Otis, and an OG like Jerome.

It was definitely a "hood" show.

The fact that the poll results don't agree is just indicative of a group of people who don't want to see things for what they are.
Martin was a hood show.

How I know?

Because even the most pro-Black, BBC-loving, hood pawgs never watched Martin. Martin is like the TV version of a racial purity test. You couldn't really be Black-adjacent and watch it. Quintessential Black show....rarely hear any other race quoting it.
