Back in the 90s, I can remember his name constantly in rotation of being discussed as the best ever, usually somewhere in the top 3.

As the decades go by, he seems to get pushed back further and further...my guess is he's somewhere in the 7-10 range at this point.

I saw Erving at the tail end of his career, maybe it was the media or my family at the time but Bird was looked at like Bron is today, the golden prodigy and maybe seeing Bird all throughout the 80s plays a part of why I value Bird over Erving. But thats a good question?

Bird was not looked at like Lebron. Stop it.

And Bird has been grossly overvalued as a player.

Always feels like posters around here are dying to get Bird out of that top 5-10 range:russ:

In the era of YouTube there is no shortage of footage or ways to see a certain player from a different era. I watched a lot of youngish Dr J and older DrJ over the years, I really don't didn't get a feel for what made him so great. Dude has so many iconic moves tho so you can't really say he isn't a top 20 player of all time. I just can't put him in my personal top 5 or 10

No....you can't YouTube highlight your way into discussions about players you haven't seen.

You haven't watched young Dr J. For one, there isn't much full game footage of the ABA. Two...most highlight reels are simply highlight reels. I can pull up something on Harold Minir right now and he'd look like a YouTube all star.

Just say you don't know much about him beyond clips.

I got playlists full of games from the 70s, 80s and 90s breh. You not gonna sit here and tell me what I do and don't watch, I've made threads about youtubing old games and how endless the library is online. The quality isn't good but the games are watchable if your interested in doing the research. Take this L and move on breh

Let's be real. When we watch current day athletes, we don't only watch their games, we watch their contemporaries and the teams they also play on so we have an idea of where an athlete is in stature. You can watch Dr. j but you aren't watching his contemporaries playing games. You have to take in an overall wide league play to know how great a player really is. YouTube isn't giving that to you.

That is very true...it's also why I don't get how you can judge players of different eras against this one. But like I said before from what I've seen of Dr J he's no doubt a top 20 player of all time, I just don't see what separates him from other players in peoples eyes.

Like you know how there isn't a question Magic, Mj are goat type players, you don't question that even as other players come up and challenge their places in history.
