Muddy Waters was the other truly bright moment of 1996 respectively.

And I love Hell On Earth. But it was a step down beat wise. P is one of my favorites ever and he was locked in. But that also furthered the divide lyrically between Hav & P to the point where you just zoned Hav out. On the Infamous you know EVERY havoc verse.

It was the year when all the momentum that began in 1993, which was a jumping off point for a new era, slowed and began to erode.

Pac & BIG are beefing.

Big is pumping up wack ass lil Kim & junior mafia. And the king fish clown of the ages, Puffy is FEELING himself and trying his best to replace Pete Rock as the adlib king.

Pac drops a chest thumping, over the top album that went 180 degrees from the introspective and paranoid brilliance heFINALLY committed to wax the year before on the haunting yet hopeful MATW .....and dumbos ate it up.

Wack ass foxy brown emerges who along with Kim truly sparks the video ho renaissance

Nas drops the ball and sell out.....people eat it up

The goofy ass fugees somehow become HUGE

Jeru, Keith Murray, Mobb Deep, Tribe all drop albums that aren't as good as the ones that preceded them.

Even Ironman didn't seem to be on par with the previous Wu solos at first....I've since changed my mind here.

M.O.P & Preemo didn't hit the grand slam intended with firing squad and IMO some of the MOP mojo from to the death was compromised

fukking Ice Cube became an absolute buffoon and went from a guy who was once the best to completely unlistenable

De La were grumpy rightfully so.

The boot camp Clik were eschewing "Da sweetminerz" to quote Rock in favor of dudes from ebbit's field with keyboards.

The only true positive surprises were reasonable doubt & ATLiens. The Roots managed to top their previous work as well but historically no one ever truly cares about them.

Everything was just a few notches worse and in some instances, notably Nas and Pac, significantly worse.

Let the anger wash your tears wayward son.

I agree with this about 99% especially th shyt about Ghost and Mobb

The fukk?:what:

So people want to start threads talking about Amerikkka's Most Wanted is not a classic? Get the fukk outta here, bruh.

If YOU dont like that album, thats your business. But to say its not a classic, is fantasy and hate all rolled into one. Don't be ignorant. The events that surrounded this release, are very relevant. NWA were f*ckin huge at the time. No fukks given by Cube. This nikka went and got east coast production and the outcome was nothing short of epic.

The nikka You Love to Hate and Amerikka's Most Wanted will forever be some of the hardest shyt to ever bless my ears.

Once Upon A Time in the Projects, Endangered Species, You Can't Fade Me ....... you go listen to them tracks again.

I can understand a shorty coming with the ignorance, but not a grown ass man.

most of these really aren't even considered real classics, but the campaign is serious.

in no order:

1. any Eminem album that they try to pass off as classic
2. any retail album that came out after 2003.
3. outkast - aquemini & atliens
4. dr dre - 2001
5. biggie - life after death

6. tribe - 1st album.
7. any de la soul album
8. ugk - ridin dirty
9. t.i. - trap muzik
10. nas - stillmatic
11. scarface - the fix - some people on here call it classic just because it got 5 mics in the source.

honorable mention: 50 cent - get rich or die tryin - classic impact but not an actual classic album.
same with jay's dynasty "album".

I'm having Dogg Food & Bow Down as a lesser extent as classics too.

Dogg Food, the production is A1. Daz laced that album. Not one wack track on there. Respect, Smooth, Lets Play House, New York New York, I dont like to dream about getting paid, One by One ...... piff. I don't see a weakness to this album.

Bow Down - people's gripe with this was it come across as opportunistic, the tried to profit of the east coast west coast beef without being really about that. Even if this is the case, the album slaps from front to back. In fact, thinking about it im happy to label this a personal classic rather than universal.

Wacky, that girl in your avatar has to rank as the most gruesome female I've come across on The Coli. Almost man-like. Really bad stuff.

Stillmatic is an amazing album. The only problem with that album is Braveheart Party...i cant stand it. Rule is another arguable track but other than that its is pure fire.

I've seen you banging the drum about Aquemini and ATLiens in many threads lol. I'll give you this, your very strong on your opinion of Outkast and Andre 3K in particular.

Tha Infamous still slaps to this day, which says something in the current "Trap" era, but I think you are underselling "Hell On Earth's" production. Sure, it doesn't hit you hard and isn't overtly menacing, but it has this sort of ethereal, ambient quality from start to finish that might be MORE effective in capturing the whole sullen, grim reality of NY trife life. The beats are more like "soundscapes", Beethoven in Hell.

As far as Havoc, I can't really contest that, but I think P did MORE than enough heavy lifting to make up for it. I'm too young to say this, but based on all the music I've heard from that year, I'd say Prodigy was MC of the year in 1996?

Mine and Whatever Concerns me
here's some perspective from my era:

Nation Of Million - uber classic

Fear Of a Black Planet - not classic

Straight Outta Compton - Mega classic

Nigaz4life - not classic

36 Chambers - classic

Wu Tang Forever - not classic

Infamous - classic

Hell On Earth - not classic

and so on and so forth.

Straight outta compton is GARBAGE.

It has the classic tag based on pure shock value.

There's no such thing as a forced classic. On the net, a classic album (despite dictionary definitions) is basically any album that a fan holds in high esteem. Threads like this kill any notion of a definitive classic because people will go out of their way to discredit a classic even if it's widely held as classic. You're not going to get an objective opinion because people are just going to dismiss albums they don't like. It's hard to get a rational opinion because people aren't going to respect the music even if they don't like it.
