What you see, is what you get
MK4 just sucked period from the endings to the game play. They tried to be innovative with 3D at the time and it was bad. The best thing Midway did was give the series a 5 yr break. Funny thing is yrs later MK Armageddon surpassed MK4 as far as thee worst MK game EVER.

But yeah, everything after Ultimate MK3 made me pump the brakes on MK. I'll play it once to give it a chance, but that period from MK4 - Armageddon probably gave us some of the most trash gameplay, endings, and characters in any fighting game.

Yeah Midway got carried away with the series with UMK3, MK Trilogy, & then MK 4. I liked MK Deception when they started the series back up in 2002. Although all those characters you mentioned were straight ass. The only reason I ended up playing MK 4 was because I rented it from Blockbuster and the game actually had the manual in it w/Fatalities (which was a first). Once the rental period was over I said whatever... I was burnt out on MK when they dropped Trilogy on PS1.
