People say "Punk didn't get a chance" and point to this, but they're forgetting that he actually had the belt for most of the year before this PPV happened, and was in the main event picture for the 10 months leading up to it. They gave him a chance and he sold some T-shirts, but didn't draw.
Really the guy drew money two nights in his life: one with a "wrestling is fake, but what happens tonight is real!" gimmick that wasn't sustainable, the other with UFC selling "a play fighter who isn't tough getting his ass kicked by a real fighter" to its fans. Both were gimmicks and weren't sustainable. CM Punk is a gimmick wrestler.
That's why Cena main evented. They know he at least can draw his kid fanbase no matter what. CM Punk needed to kill the credibility of the business to get single small PPV buy increases.
then i read the card and damn near had my buzz demolished. How could Cena/JL ever be something people want to see. The thought of Cole and crew hyping up that “main event” feud all through a PPV is pure scust
