how does defining the start menu make it pointless? i know what the start menu is lol

you expect zillions of people to say oh thats all it is??? well then go ahead and remove it

by your logic whats the point of icons or windows explorer?

Everywhere
Metro start menu was pointless on non touch screen devices and the global search was already there in the Win 7 menu.

Its redundancy for the sake of people being comfortable with redundancy. Anything that was in the start menu can be placed as shortcuts on the taskbar or even on the desktop. That was why Microsoft got rid of it because its completely unnecessary. It took me half a day to get used to it not being there in Windows 8.

What they're calling the start menu in Windows 10 is just the metro start screen with live tiles shrunk down and a few options next to it. The start menu is such a joke that they're basically mocking people by giving them the same thing they had repackaged (metro start screen) and because it resembles the old start menu people are happy.

We'd been using the start menu since Windows 95 so about 20 years. Its time for Windows desktop UIs to evolve beyond that now. For all practical purposes they already have and did so when they allowed people to pin shortcuts to the taksbar. once you start using taskbar pinning for your most used programs you probably wouldn't use the start menu much anymore if at all. I'm pretty sure that was the official logic Microsoft presented when they dropped it.

I'm already eagerly anticipating the praise Windows 10 will get. Looks mostly like Windows 8.1 to me. Its kinda silly that Microsoft seemingly has to re-release Windows 8.1 with the option to shrink down the start screen and have the desktop viable behind it and that's what it takes to get people to try Windows 8.1 which is a great OS many people refuse to try or adjust to.

The price, compatibility, potential bugs keeps me from making the switch. Plus this will be a nightmare for businesses to switch to due to confused middle aged users. I feel sorry for whoever is working the help desk when their company finally decides to roll this out.
Businesses will probably sick to Windows 7 like they previously did with Windows XP. Then if windows 10 us piff, they'll roll that out.
