straight up...first time i heard this album i fell asleep.
a couple days after xmas, on the couch, put a movie on in the background, this in the cd player, headphones on and i ended up ZZZzzzzzzzzzzzz

had a playlist on my ipod of what tracklisting i would have made the album, what i would have cut etc.
Thiefs Theme, Just A Moment, War, Remember The Times, You Know My Style were definitely my most played songs from the album.

not my least played Nas album though.. thats between Nastradamus and HHID.

And this is another thing...alotta people seemed to like the album when it first dropped...even critics...

You gotta understand that 2004 was a critical time for Nas, and his stans such as myself. The Jay Z battle was still in the air, so we couldnt admit that the record was a complete debacle. As loyal stans we gritted our teeth, and convinced ourselves the record was fine.

Its kinda like if ya mans brings home his newborn from the hospital, and the baby looks like sideshow bob on meth. You aint gunna say "gawdamn...wtf, is that my niqqa!!" You're gunna be like, "damn you have a beautiful kid. Congratulations". Nas needed us at the time. We were loyal, and we remained strong even in the face of this trash album.

Well, Nas doesnt need us to lie anymore. Hes unquestionably the GOAT in my eyes. The war is over. I can tell the truth now. People are posting some of the supposed good songs from SD in this thread, and its making me hate the album even more. Its worse than I remembered. Bottom line, outside of Nazareth Savage and Just a moment SD fcking sucks for the most part, besides his spttin' of course.

I thought it was genuinely fine the way it was and liked the fact he didnt follow everyone else's direction. Most people might have thought 2004 was a critical time for him, but he didnt. He was just family and was about chilling. He probably comfortable in his position after Stillmatic and Godson and that might have been a mistake but really that was no different than what he was doing before (Taking 2 years off in between records and doing his own thing when he came backout)
He probably would have faced a bit of cynicism anyway working with Ye and 9th right off the bat of Black Album too, he's always been the dude to kinda to do his own thing.
I just found it interesting cause he mixed old street records with being a modern family man or trying to be. I kinda dug it for being his most personable record. In fact, its more comparable to Life is Good that people care to imagine which is why I find the difference in both records reaction sort of interesting.

But it did get a lot of critical praise when it dropped...with the exception of The Source which reviewed 2 months after for some odd reason

Nas - War (feat. Keon Bryce) - YouTube

one of my personal favorite Nas songs
Yup. This song, 3rd verse of Street's Disciple, A Message...these are some of my favorite Nas performances ever. Between that and plenty other gems I def enjoyed this album. But I understand why people don't...

Hip Hop Is Dead on the other hand was a boring waste of time IMO. Nas couldn't write his way out of that...

I remember playing this album daily for months in high school.... It has very little replay value now. Illmatic doesn't feel dated IMO but SD does.

yaw'l most certainly did... i remember telling people that bridging the gap was garbation... man, i had my share of NaS stans pissed at me for that... notice, not one person mentioned that song in this thread...

anyhow, the parts of street's disciple i liked were a radical departure from what NaS usually made/makes.... from tracks sekou story, live now, rest of my life, just a moment, to reason, those 5 songs in a row represent some of the earthiest, grittiest, somber rap songs he's ever made.. i could understand people not liking those songs.. those wouldn't get played in the club or at the backyard function...

the rest of the album had its highs and lows, but something about it just wasn't memorable... street's disciple is a decent enough album, even at 2 discs, but NaS has definitely made better...

btw, it's still :pacspit: on bridging the gap... but the marley marl remix is :blessed:

Yup...I look at Life Is Good as kind of the sequal to SD...the albums are VERY alike theme wise...

"Thief's Theme" set us up. Hearing what he was spittin' over that beat made seem like Street's Disciple would be some of his best work. I remember being disappointed with leaks like "Disciple" and "Good Morning". For some reason, I liked "You Know My Style". "Serious" also leaked, but didn't make the album. I didn't listen to that song until after the album came out.

When the album did drop, I remember "Nazareth Savage" and "Street's Disciple" (from Disc 2) being my favorite songs off the album. Both songs, IMO, had that spark from "Thief's Theme" that reminded me of vintage Nas. I was too caught up in the hype in '04 to even say that the album was weak or sub par. After the hype died down, the political songs and the over-the-top sexual content of some songs dragged the album down. The execution was off. Then there were some weak to wack production.

These songs were good though:

Nazareth Savage
Street's Disciple (one of Nas's best IMO)
Sekou Story
Live Now
Reason
Rest of My Life (this song flows wierdly, but something about it makes it listenable)
War
Theif's Theme
Gettin' Married
Just A Moment

Disappointing project, never like the production and nas flow was disjointed for good portion of it. Just one of the albums that collects dust on a daily.

After the release of the classic God's Son, SD was a huge disappointment.

Yup. I hated that song with a passion. I say that about a lot of SD tracks. Bridging the gap reflected a lot of the cuts on the album: Good attempt, lousy execution. A kanye sped up soul beat woulda been perfect for a collabo with his pops. The potential of that album hurts my heart, considering what we got.

BTW, LIG shts on SD.
